Technically Tarantino is a boomer as he was born right on the cusp, but his mass consumption and regurgitation of pop culture from the Gen-X era nudges him into that generation.

Thanks for reminding me about this guy. I’ve never seen his work. I gotta watch the one you mentioned.

Criterion has a suggestion email you can use. Every month they get an email from me to release 2001’s L.I.E. (yes, the NC-17 Brian Cox/Paul Dano pedophile movie lol)

The movies that date the worst for me are contemporaneous ones from the late 1960s. Having lived through those times, I find it hard to deal with go-go dancing, Nehru shirts/jackets, and other fashion (or other general cultural artifacts) of the time. (Though I still love the music.)

Jon Mulvaney just sent me a new book case and four new discs for my Godzilla set, the ones damaged by faulty glue in the disc sleeves.

You know why he took care of it personally?

…it was outta respect.

There are a lot of things that can make a film seem dated, so I certainly think that's a thing. ..and yes, I think I agree that period pictures are mostly immune to being dated.

A film that takes the prize for coming off as dated is Woman of the Year. I definitely support the modern sentiment for woman's equality in the workplace, but I'm very far from what anyone would call a social justice warrior. The end of WOTY actually made me nauseous and angry, though, it was so ridiculous. But yeah, a product of its time.
That's what I meant. I'm capable of appreciating a movie that's heavily entrenched in the politics and culture of it's time. Like 'Easy Rider' for example. In the case of 'Blood' I was saying it's value wore off for me after about the 3rd run which was a couple of years ago.

Another example of 'datedness' is 'The Twilight Zone' show(the 60's version) : a show I used to love when I was younger but now it's fairly annoying. Among other things, its so-called “life lessons” are painfully obvious, as is the entire series except for a few better than average episodes. Even that show was was heavily entrenched in the politics of it's time too.

Time is a revealer of great art.

This kind of stuff is very much on a personal level. There's directors that are talked about on this thread that don't click with me at all, like P. T. A., Wes Anderson, Wong Kar-wai, David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, Frances Ford Coppola...(yep, lots of US directors don't click with me ) I'm into older art house films but heck, even quite a few Godard films leave me flat (especially the one with the ever constant airplane's flying by noises...I'm blanking on the title at the moment. Damn you Godard! )

Anyway, I always let the people who are fans of that particular director talk it out and I'll join when someone I like comes up. We all have different tastes and being an idiot troll just makes one an idiot troll.
I believe it’s Made in U.S.A. which I like for it’s convoluted plot (I think there’s one hidden in there) and, of course, Anna in those great fashions and “The colors man.....Oh, the colors.”

That show is still a masterpiece. The writing is the best I’ve ever seen on a tv show. The themes are pretty universal, so it doesn’t feel dated to me.

That's the one. I knew you'd know the title since you and I were texting each other the first time I watched it on TCM. I remember explicitly texting you over and over about those d*** airplanes!

I'll give it another try when TCM shows it again. Maybe I was just irritable that day.

During this 30% off the regular price month on the Criterion site I'm going to buy Rififi to keep Topkapi the company it's missing.

I agree with you that the writing (and direction and performances) keeps TZ impressive. At the same time, I think TV2693's view can't quite be dismissed. Rod Serling and his crew presented some amazing, thematically engaging stories (as did a lot of the other "plays for television" anthology shows of the time), but watching them from today's perspective, they can seem a little too obvious.

I agree.

Also, some of the series' best episodes involve twist endings that, once you know what's coming, present diminishing returns on repeat viewings.

Certainly the show is an all-time great and nothing will change that. I have found, however, that I don't get anywhere near as much out of them now as I did when I was younger.

Anybody watch that IFC comedy show Documentary Now? I was with Tarantino on the whole film vs digital debate till I saw that show. They shoot their episodes on digital camera, then put the footage through something called LiveGrain and perfectly emulate any film stock, from Grey Gardens to The Thin Blue Line. I’m converted.

I don't think that's really the point though, right?
