I like how you choose to use the word "standards" to ensure that you place your opinion above his.

If we are talking about watching either of these shows as kids, well, there is your answer right there. But there were adults watching them. Why do we not hear of comments akin to ours from adults back then?
That's an interesting question and I don't miss them. If I want my liberal sermon of the week I can turn on the news.

If you want to send a message, use Western Union. Not TV shows.

I don't care if a TV show/movie/book is liberal, conservative or non-political. Whether it's religious or non-religious etc etc...all I care about is if the story is told well and true to the person telling it. I always try to put myself into the time period the story is being told. I've been reading Science Fiction stories for almost forty years now and it's a genre that doing that with works beautifully.

Anyway, my Rififi BD purchase may be in today. Crossing my fingers.

That’s fine. But as far as the writing goes, Rod Serling was the greatest TV writer of all time, and in 2013, the Writers Guild of America ranked the show the #3 best-written TV series ever...and TV Guide ranked it the fifth greatest TV show of all time, so it’s still highly revered.

Not to mention Richard Matheson and Charles Beaumont. Or episodes like "I Sing the Body Electric" by Ray Bradbury. I think most would agree Twilight Zone is one of the best written shows of all time, but I can understand someone coming to it now and thinking it "antiquated" if they don't put themselves in its historical perspective.

To me, it's endlessly rewatchable and has been since I was a kid. Not that every episode is a home-run, but what they were able to do in a 25-minute story arc, 60 years ago at that, is nothing short of amazing imo.

And a lot of what is being dismissed as predictable or trite can be treated as such only because of its ubiquitous influence and repeated subsequent imitation by later generations.

Do you guys like the way the OP is organized now? Or would you prefer it to look something like this?

Quote:
BREATHLESS (3 releases)

Quote:
LA DOLCE VITA - OUT OF PRINT

NOTE: The film is also available in the ESSENTIAL FELLINI box set.
Quote:
A FILM TRILOGY BY INGMAR BERGMAN (3 films)

NOTE: These films are also available in the INGMAR BERGMAN'S CINEMA box set.
Quote:
THE KILLING
Includes KILLER'S KISS as an extra

Quote:
WORLD OF WONG KAR WAI (7 films)

If you guys like these examples, I could even take them a step further. I could get fancy with them, adding spine numbers, release dates, etc.

Thanx so much to all you folks for the Criterion Sale info! I remembered it fairly correctly, but it's great to have it all "Official-like."

I like that these new concepts provide a lot more info at a glance, but I still appreciate the clean look of the current OP organized by release date. Personally, I'd stick with the current but wouldn't be upset if more folks preferred the alternative.

Whatever the decision, thanks for the effort in maintaining the OP! It's a lot of work that we probably don't say "thanks" for often enough.

I really like how neat and easy to scroll through the current setup is personally. I don't feel like we need multiple releases of films there. I think the breakdown of the boxsets is already done in the database, so it doesn't feel necessary to do it here, especially since the tinier thumbnails aren't really that easy to see anyway. It would get cumbersome with bigger sets like the Zatoichi, Bergman, Olympics sets too, Plus it'll probably be hard for you to manage Scottie

If anything, perhaps you could have an "expanded" view with spines, release date, etc.. for the current year, and then the past years are just in the current "archive" thumbnail layout?

edit: Another alternative would to simply keep the yearly lists as is, but have additional sub-sections for titles that have had multiple re-releases, a section for OOP titles, a section for titles with feature films as extras, and a section for box sets / collections, etc..

I personally enjoy the current layout as is.

I do want to do so something about the films included as main entries in box sets -- see the 39 entries in the Bergman box set, for example.

I've been playing around with a few things.

Definitely think I'm going to find a better way to restructure the OOP/discontinued releases as some previously OOP films are back in print.

I agree. I'm an unabashed Liberal, but one of the (few) network TV shows I watch every week is Blue Bloods, which has a very definitely conservative bent. I don't necessarily agree with any positions it advances, but they are true to the characters.

Well, Paddy Chayevsky and Reginald Rose fans might disagree.

Criterion is God!

Their choice to not release in UHD is a test of faith!

All praise Criterion!

I wonder if Victim will get an HD upgrade? It’s streaming on HBO Max for the TCM festival with the Criterion and Janus logos.
