Default The Bearable Lightness Of August

My Criterion wishlist is extensive, so I'm fine with not adding anything new for the Criterion sale in the fall. That said, would've loved to be a fly on the wall at the Criterion meeting(s) to discuss the August slate:
  1. Beasts of No Nation: Isn't this still viewable via Netflix? Regardless, it's a worthwhile watch for Idris and that's about it. Objectively, this title lacks the acclaim and related sales upside of prior Netflix-to-Criterion titles.
  2. Ashes and Diamonds: As a charter Criterion Channel subscriber, this is available for streaming. That said, this is a likely add to my wishlist for next year, or beyond.
  3. Original Cast Album 'Company': There's a market for this title, but I have to wonder how many buyers will pick this up given the contraction at B&N.
  4. After Life: This title is right in the Criterion wheelhouse. Should be successful, but I'm not inclined to pick this up anytime soon.

I was planning on watching Shoplifters soon as I will be renewing my Hulu subscription in order to watch Season 4 of The Handmaid's Tale.

Hard to believe it's been over 10 years since Still Walking was released on blu-ray.

After Life is day 1.

Deep Cover is one of my favourites of those 90s crime thrillers/neo-noirs. Standout performances from Fishburne and Goldblum as well.

It's a cracking little film in my opinion.
Do you know how many great crime films came out in 1990-1995? Goodfellas, The Crying Game, Boyz n the Hood, Menace II Society, Leon the Professional, One False Move, Hard-Boiled, The Last Seduction, King of New York, Red Rock West, Bad Lieutenant, Reservoir Dogs, True Romance, Pulp Fiction, Desperado, Romeo Is Bleeding, Miller’s Crossing, Point Break, A Perfect World, Casino.

ALL of them better than Deep Cover

Not my favorite when they upgrade a sole title from a set.

You know if you don’t want a title you can just not buy it right? Criterion isn’t reading this and they won’t go, “oh that one user really doesn’t like this movie, let’s drop it and consult them and only them to figure out what we should and shouldn’t release.”.

I’d love to see One False Move and Point Break in the Criterion Collection.

Did anyone see Beasts of No Nation coming??? I certainly didn't. And that one is coming out before a couple of Netflix titles that were announced long ago to be eventual Criterion releases, Atlantics and American Factory, have even gotten confirmed release dates.

I just hope more Netflix films are on the way. Mank, Mudbound, the Meyerowitz Stories, and most importantly Buster Scruggs get Blu-ray releases.

With the upcoming theatrical release of Distant Journey, I was reminded that Janus Films and the National Film Archive signed a 30-something film contract.

We've already seen a couple of these released, with the others to follow.
