Did you do it manually or did you automate it somehow? How hard/long would it be to do the main list of all titles not carried at Unobstructed View (without separating them into different categories) with DVDs too? That would be amazing, but no worry if you can't or don't have the time.

Thanks again!
It took about an hour or two with an excel spreadsheet -- middle of the night, baseball games mostly finished.

Downloading the Criterion list was simple. The Unobstructed View was a bit harder since they max at 24/page. Then it was lining up the two lists, correcting the alphabetized issues, eliminating the duplicates, then checking the leftovers. The last step was the slowest since I had to do those one at a time. I've certainly done far harder lists with Disney Movie Club

The DVD would be similar length probably. I might try it over the weekend. Criterion.com lists around 1000 DVD including the Eclipse Boxsets with 80 OOP items. I think UV has around 800 DVDs in their filter

I do remember the Del Toro Trilogy being listed OOP at the last Flash Sale, but it's not included in the Criterion.com Bluray OOP Filter. I wonder if there are others like that

Wow. For the June Criterion Channel lineup, they've got "3X John Waters", which includes "Multiple Maniacs", "Pink Flamingos", and "Female Trouble".

I've already got the Criterion blu's of "Maniacs" and "Trouble". I've been hearing for a while that Waters said Criterion was doing "Flamingos", too. So, if it's ready enough for the channel, I DO hope we'll get a physical release down the line...

Per Ashley Clark on twitter, Janus have picked up Eyimofe (This is My Desire) for theatrical distribution this year, with it coming to the channel and the collection next year.

I emailed the official Chaplin website/office in France about releasing The Pilgrim and other First National pictures on Blu-ray. Got this reply, for any Chaplin fans who are interested:

Presumably you are in the U.S. or Canada? Distribution rights to Chaplin's First Nationals (including The Pilgrim) have been licensed by our distributors MK2 to Criterion in the U.S./Canada. The Kid, for example, has already been beautifully restored by Cineteca di Bologna and Criterion, under licence. We very much hope that the other First Nationals will be the subject of similar restorations in due course but there is no schedule as yet.

If you are in the U.S., and since U.S. distribution rights are licensed to Criterion, then - if you wish - you can send Criterion a note telling them just how much you would love to see The Pilgrim on blu-ray: https://www.criterion.com/contact_us (To suggest a title, please write to: suggestions@criterion.com) Fingers crossed they will release it some time soon!

Should we be concerned about the MGM titles? I know any change has potential to mess with things, but Criterion seem to have a growing relationship with amazon anyway. I was thinking this could go the other way and we'd finally see some of the conspicuous absences from this list finally making it to the UK (Silence of the Lambs for example, which has been a gaping hole in the UK releases for a long time). Night of the Hunter is due out here in a few weeks so it seems like there'd be a fair bit of time left on any existing deals. Similarly with them starting to release Fox titles over here recently that has put my mind at ease somewhat about all those disappearing. Maybe I'm just fooling myself because I can't afford to buy 100 titles in the next sale but I feel ok about it.

I think it's a reasonable reaction. Amazon has done some physical releases before, but they're rare. Their primary business model when it comes to movies and television is streaming through Prime. We've had sudden announcements of films being discontinued with no notice.

It is definitely within the realm of possibility that MGM titles could suddenly become scarce.

Between Fox, Paramount and now MGM I’m going to have take out a loan. Especially after what happened to that group of Paramount titles

I actually think the Amazon/MGM deal could be good for all. Amazon will retain the streaming rights to all the titles, but why wouldn't they want to license out a title to a company that wants to put it on plastic? It's a win-win for AMZ. They get funds from streaming, basically forever, unless they sell the catalog. They also get funds from the 'crazies' that want to put one of their stable out on a plastic disc. And to double dip in $$$, they get to sell the 'crazies' disc on their site making money off the 'crazy' company that already paid them $$ to put out the disc. Who wouldn't want to make money twice and still sell the movie on their streaming service. They are TRIPLE dipping!! Plus they may be willing to license titles for a better price to the little guys, since they already own the world anyways. No wonder they own it all. I wouldn't panic yet, as I think Amazon is a lot smarter than Disney when it comes to streaming and physical media.

Made an interesting afternoon project and a bit more complicated than the Bluray sets since I don't really have a full database of Canadian Criterion DVD releases.

Criterion.com has 994 DVD releases in it's filtered list with 80 listed OOP so 914 In-print DVD

Unobstructed View has 797 spots listed, but approx 21 or so are blank slots at the end of a page and another 22-23 are duplicated listings. Remove those, add a dozen Preorders which aren't included in their filter and a dozen+ BD/DVD combos which are missed by the filters. I ended up with 771 in-print Criterion DVD matching on the Criterion.com list and UV site.

There are 3 additional DVD on the UV site which aren't part of the Criterion's database - older+newer releases of Tunes of Glory and The Lady Eve, plus Rosemary's Baby DVD which is in the Criterion OOP pile

That leaves 143 Criterion DVDs unaccounted for on UV -- some were produced and may be OOS on UV or OOP in Canada (I could only find hard release dates for less than 10 of the missing titles and I know there's more than that). The rest were either never released by Criterion in Canada or aren;t in my database searches.

[Show spoiler]
2 extra titles at UV that aren't on Criterion.com and appear to be Earlier releases
The Lady Eve 16-Oct-2001 (+ replacement version released 14-July 2020)
Tunes of Glory (Out of Print) 17-Feb-2004 (+ replacement version 3-Dec 2019)

Not Available on Criterion DVD at UV. Dates are release dates for those items I could find with a specific CA release (I'm not 100% confident in those however).

Criterion have just listed Blow Out and All About Eve for release in the UK in August, further implying they have fresh ink on their MGM and Fox deals.

If Criterion has a deal with Amazon, then they should release Too Old to Die Young on blu-ray. That would bring me much joy.

Expiring from The Criterion Channel - Crumbs (2015)

Crumbs is like nothing else you've ever seen. It's an Ethiopian film starring an actor (Daniel Tadesse) whose physical disability is never acknowledged by anyone he comes across - especially his beautiful girlfriend, who absolutely adores him. Almost every other movie would make his "differences" the focus, so it's a genuine breath of fresh air that this one doesn't.

But that's only the tip of the iceberg of what makes Crumbs unique...

Imagine a post-apocalyptic society with a giant hand-shaped spaceship hovering in the sky, a Ninja Turtles action figure and other 1980s products treated as revered totems, a tongue-wagging Michael Jordan as the god they worship, and a quest to find Santa Claus.

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what this movie is trying to say about pop culture, celebrity, consumerism, and who we "worship" and why. But one thing I know for sure is that this is going to stick with me for a long time to come.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: Crumbs sounds bonkers - and it is - but at a little over an hour, it's not much of a time commitment and well worth taking a chance on.

Expiring from The Criterion Channel - Cassandro, the Exotico! (2018)

Cassandro, the Exotico! is a documentary about a Mexican luchador (wrestler) who changed the portrayal of the exotico (an openly gay and effeminate character) from a sideshow camp act into an ass-kicking main event star and World Champion.

This is presented almost like a home movie. Its structure is very loose and freewheeling. In that way, it reminds me somewhat of a Ross Brothers documentary. Because everything unfolds in such a low key way, the darker aspects of Cassandro's story just kind of sneak up on the viewer.

It should go without saying that the wrestling scenes are fantastic and the costumes are a sight to behold. If you have any interest in fashion, there's plenty to feast your eyes on here.

Cassandro, the Exotico! is truly an international production: It's a mostly English language film by a French director about one of the staples of Mexican culture. That dynamic made me immediately think of the documentary Black Panthers by French director Agnes Varda. Both films were directed by objective outsiders.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: Cassandro's story is fascinating, but I was left wanting even more. Maybe that's a good thing. Thankfully, this isn't the last we're going to see of Cassandro. Gael García Bernal will apparently be portraying the exotico in an upcoming film. Even though he is one of my favorite actors, I almost wish Pedro Pascal had gotten cast instead, because he would be truly perfect for the part. (Subtitles/Captions: Yes, but they disappear from the screen too quickly - an odd glitch that isn't present on other services showing this movie.)

Has anyone actually confirmed the Barnes & Noble Criterion sale for July? A Google search, and search of this topic, doesn’t show definitively.

While I have a feeling the Amazon acquisition of MGM will ultimately be a positive, I think it would be wise to hedge my bet, and grab the MGM titles I’ve held off on.

Probably a tad too early. Even before the pandemic, I don't think we had confirmation in May - although we used to have an "insider" employee with the company who posted info here (Namuhana?).

I'm working on the assumption there will be one. And making my list accordingly.

Seems to me that we'd never get an official announcement of the sale from either B&N or Criterion until 2-3 weeks before it goes live.

Rarely there have been leaks a bit earlier, but usually sometime after Father's Day before we'll hear something. It seems the last couple sales we didn't get a legit heads up until the week before though everything the last 12 months has been a bit screwed up of course.

At this point I'm almost more interested in whether the Fathers Day 40% will happen this year. Last year they skipped it, but so many stores were still on lockdown I'm hoping that was the reason since it seems to b most useful as an In-store (or instore ship to home) sale. I guess FD is the 20th this year so sometime around 12-14th we'll know about that sale
