Spellbound, Alfred Hitchcock needs CC treatment.

Alfred Hitchcock Presents... tv show would be sweet to get on BD too.

It's been anticipated for a couple of years now, especially after the upgrades for Rebecca and Notorious. Not quite sure what the delay is.

Criterion.com has 994 DVD releases in it's filtered list with 80 listed OOP so 914 In-print DVD

Unobstructed View has 797 spots listed, but approx 21 or so are blank slots at the end of a page and another 22-23 are duplicated listings. Remove those, add a dozen Preorders which aren't included in their filter and a dozen+ BD/DVD combos which are missed by the filters. I ended up with 771 in-print Criterion DVD matching on the Criterion.com list and UV site.

There are 3 additional DVD on the UV site which aren't part of the Criterion's database - older+newer releases of Tunes of Glory and The Lady Eve, plus Rosemary's Baby DVD which is in the Criterion OOP pile

That leaves 143 Criterion DVDs unaccounted for on UV -- some were produced and may be OOS on UV or OOP in Canada (I could only find hard release dates for less than 10 of the missing titles and I know there's more than that). The rest were either never released by Criterion in Canada or aren;t in my database searches.

[Show spoiler]
2 extra titles at UV that aren't on Criterion.com and appear to be Earlier releases
The Lady Eve 16-Oct-2001 (+ replacement version released 14-July 2020)
Tunes of Glory (Out of Print) 17-Feb-2004 (+ replacement version 3-Dec 2019)

Not Available on Criterion DVD at UV. Dates are release dates for those items I could find with a specific CA release (I'm not 100% confident in those however).

Thank you so much! You have no idea how much this helps! It's not really worth buying from Criterion.com anymore since they switched to DHL with their $23 shipping fees and $18 duty fees but I have the $50 loyalty gift card so I'm going to place one last order during the next flash sale and I want to make the most of it.

Has someone spoken with Criterion directly about the Canadian shipping issue and the specific problems? I will guess someone has, but if ALLIANCE is in full control of their disc shipping/distribution I'm not sure that would do a lot of good.

Don't suppose you're close enough to the US border to make a US PO Box worthwhile or using one of the Border Pickup addresses worth it -- or a friends address on the US side who visits often (once the border finally opens).

I would suggest B&N though won't help with the Loyalty Cert, but ALLIANCE does their shipping too.

Expiring from The Criterion Channel TONIGHT - The Lady Eve (1941)

This is the second Preston Sturges film I've watched, and while it's not perfect, I thought it was far better than The Palm Beach Story. Barbara Stanwyck is to thank for that! Henry Fonda holds his own in a relatively early role, but this is Babs' show all the way! She's pitch-perfect in rattling off Preston Sturges' witty rapid-fire dialogue. Here she plays a con artist who tries to snare the naive Fonda in, only to end up falling in love with her mark.
[Show spoiler]Stanwyck's British accent in the second half definitely isn't up to snuff, and I can't tell if the ending was suppose to be romantic or a continuation of the long con presented in the rest of the movie.
(Subtitles/Captions: Yes!)

Expiring from The Criterion Channel TONIGHT - The Railway Children (1970)

This is beyond old-fashioned, but it looks gorgeous and has charm for miles. Three children "become poor" after their father mysteriously leaves them, and they're forced to move from a palatial mansion to a "little" cottage in Yorkshire, where they become regulars at the railway station and have many adventures. The Railway Children is absolutely delightful and ended up being my surprise favorite of all the expiring movies I watched this month. Fun fact: The middle sister was already legally an adult and older than her "big sister" in the film. She was actually 20 but played 11, and did so fairly convincingly. I could tell the railway children were a little bit older than the ages they played in the film (the other two were almost 18 and 14 in real life), but I still thought they were all kids. (Subtitles/Captions: No. Thankfully, the English accents are clear and "posh" so I was able to understand 85-90% of the dialogue.)

That was Sally Thomsett. She appeared the following year in Straw Dogs which leaves you with no doubt that she was not a child.

She was also in the British sitcom Man About the House (1973-1976) which was later remade in the U.S. as Three's Company.

It's Criterion, they make their fans wait for years sometimes. Look at the Chaplin releases, Kurosawa or Harold Lloyd. Maddening so it's not surprising they haven't released Spellbound.

New restorations take time, and Spellbound’s current master is extremely problematic. Also, we technically don’t know if they have the rights to it.

Those Hitchcock-Selznick titles are definitely a packaged deal (except for "The Paradine Case"). Plus, the only other label that might of released "Spellbound" is Kino and their old insider stated years ago that they didn't have it.

You jogged my memory on this. I ran a quick search and back in 2017 Mister Lime confirmed KL did not have Straw Dogs, Rebecca, Notorious, or Spellbound - which was taken as "confirmation" that Criterion did.

Most likely they are just spacing out their Hitchcock releases. Spellbound is less popular than Rebecca and Notorious, so that’s probably why they are putting it out last.

Rebecca came out in 2017, and Notorious in 2019, so I'd say based on that pattern Spellbound would be "due" this year. Of course the pandemic may have delayed things, so who knows..

If there's to be a 4th 'Before' movie and they stick with the every 9 years thing, I'd imagine production would begin this summer. Might be a long shot because I remember reading an article where Ethan Hawke said they wouldn't do the 9 year gap again.

Just saw on the B&N employee Facebook group that booksellers have gotten signage for the 50% off sale, but they still haven't been updated on the dates. One bookseller suggested July 2nd, as the sale usually starts on a Friday, but that's just speculation as of now.

I'll let you all know when there are official dates though!

Haven't they indicated that the source materials are (at best) flawed and in need of significant clean-up work?
