Packaging is awesome. The restoration is totally a different type of viewing. While I like the pink and more vivid look of the previous version, the pink sky wasn't intentional and the newer restoration is more realistic. I'm a big fan of the packaging, but it's a digipak and I know some people don't like that. Don't regret buying this one to be honest and I can always saturate my TV a little more to be personally satisfied if I wanted to.

At my local B&N east of Seattle, it appears that sold-out titles are not being re-stocked with any urgency at all. This is a change from the past.
I get the feeling that they're just trying to sell off the exiting stock. Another thing I have noticed is that there are very few Criterion DVDs in stock. I'm checking the store about once a week, to see if there is any re-stocking taking place. |

Since the pandemic the stores near me have been incredibly slow getting titles on the shelf these past three sales. I’m pretty sure they have the newest titles but boxed up in the back. Movies must be their last priority it seems.

[Show spoiler] which doesn't look right. When I first saw this film 20+ years ago I don't remember any pink sky anywhere. The Kino DVD definitely didn't have it.I also like the Criterion digipaks, and this one is very beautiful, mostly because I know they'll probably have a novel or book of some sort in it. No leaflets! ![]() I'll keep my older Curzon/AE BD for the different supplements they have, but the Criterion version will be my go-to copy now. |

Yesterday I saw this remarkable 1911 silent film made in Italy, called l'Inferno adapted from Dante's Divine Comedy. It has been described as the first Italian feature length film (the version I saw runs 72min). It is of interest to film-fans in general and Criterion fans in particular because it shares a certain kinship with 1922's Haxan, especially in its use of hallucinatory imagery. This film depicts the descent of Dante into the Netherworld shepherded by the poet Virgil. There is both outdoor location shooting and imaginative set design, as well as use of elaborate costume-rigs, wires, puppetry, optical effects and what-have-you to generate the special visuals. A lot of this is quite impressive. The film does suffer a bit from the "waving hands about" style acting of early silent films but the visual effects are worth sitting through.
I think it has only had a DVD release so far (and not on Criterion) with a score by Tangerine Dream. The youtube version I have linked below has English Inter-titles and a different new score which I think fits it quite well with the film's themes. Here's hoping that some label (Criterion or Flicker Alley may be good candidates) will put out a nicely restored version of this early VFX spectacle with some relevant supplements. A user on Criterion forum has let slip a Criterion UHD is on the way and it’s an American film made in the last 30 years. Not sure if this will be the first UHD, but it’s coming.
Edit for clarification: They know what the title is, but don’t want to say as to not upset Criterion. |

I'd love a Days of Heaven UHD. It should be glorious. I might make it my first UHD watch if it's the one (though I'm not sure the movie has been remastered in 4K).
