I think it's just the stills galleries being DVD only... it's kind of a dated special feature, what with the internet and everything now.

Uncut Gems is better than Citizen Kane and would have made way more sense as the first Criterion UHD.

I will not be reading replies to this.

I'm all over High Sierra - looks like a stacked set with lots of good extras.

Universal’s RKO catalogue UK rights either expired, reverting to RKO, or were sold to Warner.
I mentioned UK rights because the first Kane BDs there were from Universal; it was while writing it that I discovered the most recent ones were from WB.

I do know that the present-day RKO Pictures LLC (run by Ted Hartley whose late wife, Post Cereals heiress Dina Merrill, bought the remains of RKO in 1989) still holds in one form or another the copyright in most RKO films, subject to various distribution deals that mostly predated the Hartleys' purchase such as the Turner library/WB deal (originally for syndication, later for home video); unlike the pre-1986 MGM & pre-1948 WB libraries, Turner Entertainment/WB has never owned the RKO library outright. (Turner Entertainment Co., which IIRC was a renaming of pre-1986 MGM/UA Entertainment Co. after Kirk Kerkorian sold it to Ted Turner and thus the direct legal descendant of pre-1959 Loew's Inc. & 1959-80 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., remains the legal copyright holder for all Turner library MGM & WB films even though WB has controlled it ever since Time Warner bought Turner in the 1990's.)

It is entirely possible that the former international distribution rights to RKO films have reverted (or will eventually revert) to RKO Pictures LLC, and that Ted Hartley has decided to consolidate all his worldwide RKO catalog rights with their best known distributor WB. If so, then there is no longer any significant region licensing issue with Kane that might complicate Criterion's release of Kane on UHDBD via both its North America & UK units. (I started that post assuming there was until I discovered the latest UK releases of Kane thru WB.)

This is the first ever HD print of Ratcatcher right? It is one of the great British films for me. I am day 1. And also for Onibaba. I've had a terrible day today and this is just the tonic. This is frigging brilliant.

They really don’t do still galleries anymore.

I’m assuming they’re leaving the DVD extras up bc those editions will still be available, or they’re keeping the feature set with new transfers on DVD. Guess we’ll see.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I don't see Criterion EVER releasing a UHD. I imagine that they'll start releasing 4K material on the Criterion Channel. But I don't see a UHD release.

I'm pleased as pudding about High Sierra, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and Onibaba.

I'm going to stick with my existing Blu-ray of Uncut Gems for now, though.

Awesome to see the High Sierra release! All the recent WAC speculation had really gotten me thinking about it again, and this Criterion edition looks amazing. As for Onibaba, another of my top upgrade wants comes off the list. Fantastic!

Perhaps you should have fixed the "no further replies" part as well. I see nothing about UHDBD in what's been posted here about the October announcement (have yet to read it myself, may be in my email), and I would expect the debut Criterion UHDBDs to drop in November anyway just ahead of Christmas (and either during or just ahead of the fall B&N sale). Still think they'll be Kane (changed from IHON) & Lambs, though there's a slim chance StudioCanal struck a new deal with Criterion for Mulholland Dr.

Yes. Nearly all A24 Blu-rays from Lionsgate are extremely barebones when it comes to supplements. This is a step in the right direction.

Saving this post for later. We already have a very credible source saying the first UHD is on the way.

Nope. The user from criterion forum (they also has an account here) who gave evidence to their mod team who said it looked legit.
