Missed opportunity to release Uncut Gems in 4K UHD.

Multiple sources have reported rumors that Criterion will release its first UHDBD later this year, and even claim to know the first titles but won't name then to protect their sources. Criterion is essentially the last label of any size, studio OR boutique, to continue to shun UHDBD entirely (though AFAIK MGM has only released Daniel Craig's past Bond films on UHDBD thru pre-Disney Fox, and future UHDBDs are shaky after the Amazon deal though perhaps not for major Universal co-releases like NTTD & Respect); unless either Criterion or UHDBD collapses tomorrow (both highly unlikely), Criterion UHDBD is long overdue. Not bad for an allegedly DOA format.

Onibaba finally ! Uncut Gems seems like a total waste unless you're specifically in for just the bonus features.

Still, the criterionforum post was so important that Jeff broke from his vacation (and usual video setup) to post from a hotel room, which led some people to joke that his channel was now Films At Hotel.

On that note, I hope Criterion puts out more Jean-Pierre Meville, some Paul Verhoeven and Manhunter. Especially Manhunter.

My bank balance is going to need some help as I've already bought 44 movies in the July sale and we're only half way.

I've loved Incredible Shrinking man for decades. It's such a great concept and wonderfully executed. Beyond excited to get this. High Sierra and Ratcatcher for sure as well. I don't know Onibaba or Devi. Never seen Uncut Gems, but friends less than enthusiastic.

Someone's been paying attention to Indicator!
No, someone’s been paying attention to Arrow’s release and keeping everything except their Tim Lucas commentary track.

Super excited for Devi, which I've put off watching for years as there's only a quite iffy-looking DVD over here. I'm assuming this one will come to the UK, but if not I'll be importing.

I'd kill for a Ray box set along the lines of the Bergman one.

I really think it's concerns about consistency in SKU's and worry about what % of their catalog they can afford to put out UHD with decent returns while dealing with fan expectations is what has kept them cautious about the market.
Some distributors have used that workaround for UHDBD region locking (the biggest was Shout! Factory on Weathering With You, probably forced by its Japanese studio; also on a handful of European releases), but the BDA has since correctly clarified that this violates UHDBD standards; Criterion certainly wouldn't do it even though it usually region locks its BDs. (The only region-free Criterions I can recall are Netflix-licensed Roma & Marriage Story; Roma at least was distributed worldwide by Criterion thru local partners in countries outside its North American & UK units. Even The Irishman is inconsistent; pro-bassoonist / Dr. Svet Atanasov said his review copy was region locked, and I trust his word even though my own copy tested region-free.)

My mention of region locking was because with Criterion now having a UK as well as a U.S. business, with UHDBD being inherently region-free (absent this now essentially banned by BDA workaround), they might have wanted to insist on a title they could at least license on both sides of the pond for their first UHDBD. That is already true of IHON (Criterion release in both countries), and is also likely true of Lambs (Criterion only in U.S. at present but nothing would prevent MGM from extending that to the UK); it would have been a problem for Kane if Universal still controlled it in the UK, but it's now confirmed that it currently belongs to WB there as well. (Edit: It would be a problem with Mulholland Dr. as StudioCanal releases it under its own name in the UK; unless Brexit is even worse than I thought I doubt they would ever license that to Criterion.)

Great month. Wish Devi had a few more interesting supplemental features, but very happy to get it regardless.
