As I've yet to pick up Uncut Gems, I'll likely wait for the Criterion and get it in a sale. The Incredible Shrinking Man would be a blind-buy, but I'm definitely in. And I can't wait to check out High Sierra, as I just posted in the Noir forum about an article I read positing that it was the first true film noir released, and how I hadn't seen it.

Interesting to see how Onibaba compares to the MoC release. And I've still yet to see any Ray, but Devi sounds like a future purchase.

I also went down that list, but any list that omits, like, highly acclaimed *best picture winners* Moonlight and Nomadland but has Iron Man on there, well, I’d hesitate using that as any barometer of excellence.
Haha I’m just clowning. But when it comes to age, nope! I don’t care if Tarantino is “hip and cool,” 1963 is a Boomer. Gen X (1965-1980) Millennial (1981-1996). No exceptions will be made!!

I think I would also hate using the Oscars as a barometer of excellence, but that’s just me.

While we didn't get Cure as I hoped we would for the Halloween month, I will say this is one of the better months for Criterion this year. Solid.

I'm guessing we'll get our first Criterion UHD in November which could be Citizen Kane, Mank, or both.

I will not tolerate this subtle dig at The Greatest Show on Earth!

Okay, the obvious answers to me - In Fabric, as this was already rumoured for Criterion I believe from comments at a Q&A.

De Palma, as the hour long conversation on Blow Out between De Palma and Baumbach is really a spiritual prequel to this, and the Blu-ray was barebones. Similarly American Honey is by the director of Fish Tank and is essentially barebones.

Less arthouse, but The Death of Dick Long appears to be completely barebones.

Menashe doesn't appear to have a Blu-ray anywhere - and ties in with Uncut Gems for Jewish characters in New York.

The Apple TV+ films have no physical release - On the Rocks, Boys State.

Some titles are quite limited in extras - The Lobster features a 22 minute making of featurette never released internationally. Both Hereditary and Midsommar were limited to a 20 minute making of and deleted scenes on the former. First Cow only featured a 27 minute making of. High Life and A Prayer Before Dawn have a few featurettes (the UK release of the latter has a c. 24 minute conversation between Professor Green and Billy Moore).

The VVitch thankfully has a commentary but is still largely a Salem Q&A and featurette in terms of video extras; Room, Locke, Remember, Green Room, Morris from America, Free Fire, Good Time, First Reformed, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Mid90s, The Farewell, Minari and 20th Century Women are only a commentary and a few featurettes. The End of the Tour is commentary, 25 minute making of and deleted scenes. Laggies also features a commentary, a few featurettes and deleted scenes. Eighth Grade is commentary, making of and deleted scenes.

There are many cases of a title having better extras internationally:

Lean on Pete was stacked on the UK release but the US only had a 28 minute making of. The Killing of a Sacred Deer is similar though the UK release adds on a 28 minute Q&A. On the US Blu-ray, Mississippi Grind only has an 17 minute featurette, but the UK DVD has 44 minutes in interviews with Mendelsohn and Reynolds. The Blackcoat's Daughter barely has anything on the US release, but a commentary track on the German. Enemy only had a 17 minute making of on the American release, but the UK features a 50 minute making of and 44 minutes in interviews. While We're Young barely has anything on the US release, but a half hour interview with Baumbach and Stiller on the German release. The UK release of Slow West is quite good with introduction, deleted scenes, two short films, making of featurette, Super 8 footage featurette, interviews, 26 minute director Q&A. Climax is stacked on the Arrow release, as is Gloria Bell on the Canadian VVS Films release.

Broke my rule against buying Criterion DVDs and grabbed Knife in the Water at my local Barnes and Noble today. Does anyone know why they haven't upgraded this to Blu-ray yet? It seems so long overdue.

You've pretty much guaranteed now a soon to be released Blu of "KNIFE". I did the same with "Ratcatcher" last sale for the DVD as it had been years since it came out, and here we are today!!! Blu announced. Not upset, though. It just never seems to fail. Buy the really old DVD, and the Blu will get announced very soon afterwards.

I watched my MoC copy of Onibaba last night so I should have known! Now get on with those other Japanese movie upgrades. Yes, I'm waiting on the Kurosawa's and others but my biggest 'impatience' is for Ichikawa's Fires on the Plain. One of my favorite films and still...nada.

Pretty darn good month. High Sierra and Devi for me, and Onibaba if I didn't already own it. Unless it's a major upgrade of the MoC release, most of the supplements look the same, I'll just stick with what I have.

I'm not sure if this is an odd request or not, but is there somewhere that archives Criterion's monthly announcements? Sometimes I like to go back and look at what groups of films were released together and when, as well as how they were described at the time. Obviously, you can look at the spines can get a general idea, but it's not obvious where each group ends, and doesn't factor in DVD upgrades. I have the e-mails, but mine only go back as far as the May 2018 slate.

Don’t get me wrong. I am pumped and excited for High Sierra. I know it’s stacked with extras, including a great second feature (Colorado Territory). I just wish that Criterion would do more commentary tracks. This is one film that I’d love to watch with the commentary track on. Not a complaint, just a wish. My pre-order will be in as soon as it goes live.

edit: Trigger pulled.

High Sierra is a definite pickup. I'm surprised there isn't more Humphrey Bogart in the CC than there already is.

Searching 'Criterion Announcing Our Titles' on Twitter goes back a little further, but not by much I think.

It’s not, but it was the cherry on top for these films - especially Moonlight - and it’s kind of ludicrous that they’re not on that particular list.

I hope Uncut Gems will have a new transfer because I don't want to double dip if they don't do anything new besides extras.

Yeah, I know they’ve said their data shows people don’t listen to commentaries that much, but I treasure them nevertheless. One of my favorite recent Criterion Channel features was when they brought back out-of-print LD commentaries, like the legendary John Sturges one for Bad Day at Black Rock.
