Weird - I specifically searched for those, but they didn’t come up and must’ve missed them when I scanned the list. Thanks for finding them!

Fingers crossed for that. I was so impressed by that 58-minute Blow Out conversation on the disc that the feature documentary De Palma itself was a bit disappointing. Sure I still enjoyed it as a De Palma fan, but when you know the same people could talk about just one picture for an hour with tons of great details, you just can't be satisfied with the mere 107-min doc browsing the director's entire career. I totally understand the need for that length and appreciate it for what it is, but there should be an extended version of that, like the 10-hour and 7-minute director's cut of Sam Peckinpah: Man of Iron on the second disc of the Arrow limited edition of Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (as opposed to the 95-minute version on the Criterion Straw Dogs disc, by the way).

What data is this? Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't recall Criterion ever directly asking for customer input on regards to, well, anything.

Commentaries are an obvious selling point IMO. Arrow and Kino are both great about including them when possible.

They’ve mentioned in a few podcasts over the years that people don’t really listen to commentaries like they used to, they bring up their info on attention spans and such, and also that it’s really hard to do a good one. Sorry I don’t have a specific reference, it’s just come up when they’ve been asked about it. I personally would prioritize a film with a commentary, especially with a proper film scholar or critic. The Howard Suber one on The Graduate was transformative for me.

(I know that certain directors have also generally refused to do commentaries - Spielberg, for one - and I wonder if that’s influenced Criterion’s take as well.)

If Criterion and A24 have some sort of deal, I hope we get On the Rocks.

I don't listen to most commentaries, but I find that commentaries by some film scholars can add greatly to my appreciation of classic films, especially noirs, and those commentaries are a selling point for me. For instance, I will blind buy anything with a commentary by Alan K, Rode, to cite just one example.

And I think their value as a time capsule just grows. I mean, we are so fortunate to have that Scorsese/Powell commentary on Colonel Blimp. Whenever we get an upgraded disc with a vintage commentary with someone who passed on, I feel really grateful they took the time to sit down for two hours and really get into the film.

Criterion October releases and more!

Pretty shocked that Uncut Gems is coming to the Criterion Collection.

This is quite a devastating month!

There are some remarkable titles here including Devi and High Sierra, with upgrades to Ratcatcher and Onibaba.

And who would have thought Spine 1100 would be The Incredible Shrinking Man? Maybe Criterion is giving us a hint that its really the incredible shrinking spine as the forthcoming UHD releases might shake up the spine numbers or at least use the same spine numbers for their UHD upgrades in 2022. In any case, don't call a shrink after pouring honey on your kids!

If Criterion and A24 are teaming up for titles, this is going to be a huge achievement for Janus Films.

I could totally see these titles in the collection someday:

On the Rocks
Midsommar
The Lighthouse
Ex Machina
Moonlight
High Life
The Last Black Man in San Francisco
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
The Lobster
Mid90s
Lady Bird
Waves

Finally, for Criterion's first UHD, we all know it will likely be Citizen Kane in its 80th anniversary release.

But why not go for broke and say the 2nd UHD release will be James Cameron's The Abyss! What a statement that would be, especially since its the first film that uses groundbreaking CGI. Criterion doesn't specialize in blockbuster movies though (unless you want to include Armageddon and The Rock as two ill-fated releases on DVD), but it still would be even more shocking than ever.

The problem with the Abyss, as with his entire filmography, is that Cameron holds all the power regarding a release and must personally sign off on it. Since he's now been bought out by Disney almost on perpetual retainer for endless Avatar sequels it seems unlikely anyone can release this, let alone Criterion.
Shame too, since before he got completely full of himself he was a somewhat gifted filmaker.

That's what I've been thinking as well. I think a lot of the titles that Criterion has been holding back have had decent, if not, outdated restorations for some of their films. Criterion is probably giving up and releasing some of their older DVD titles into Blu-ray since it seems like the companies aren't taking much interest in giving another restoration for their titles. Same with the Bunuel trilogy and Human Condition. I haven't seen Onibaba in HD yet or through Criterion Channel, but I do hope that the HD version is at least acceptable. It does look somewhat cleaned up, but I'm not too sure with the contrast and brightness on this title. Also, the screenshots that Criterion put make it look a bit hard to see (Grain is not too noticeable, also a bit too dark I argue), which I think is with the HD transfer's problems.

Still, I'm glad to finally get some of these films on Blu-ray. Hopefully, they can find more restorations for some of their future DVD titles. Really hoping that there is a restoration for Stray Dog or Drunken Angel in the talks, although I don't think it's too likely. Same can be said with some of the Suzuki flicks. However, I don't mind the current version of Youth of the Beast to be honest. It still looks surprisingly beautiful and I don't think Nikkatsu would ever take any interest in restoring in 4K or even 2K for something like that. Still one of the most beautiful Japanese films I've seen and the HD transfer that Eureka had for it was stunning

Well, so much for sitting out the Barnes & Noble sales like I told myself I would. I had to go back and make a second order for titles I wouldn't want to wait until October/November to watch. I've been wanting to see Old Joy since viewing First Cow earlier this year, and I've been watching old Hollywood movies with family recently, so it's always good to have more options. Plus titles newly-released since Criterion's flash sale that I'd rather not wait until the next one to grab.

Great release slate for October. First purchase will be Onibaba. I already own the Eureka BD but I'll be getting the Criterion as well. Boggart and Lupino is also a must buy.

Because I don’t. I think Paul Thomas Anderson would stomp all of them. My generation is NOT that good compared to Ramsay, Wes Anderson, Linklater, Coens, Lynch, Sofia Coppola, etc. Some of you need to calm down about Robert Eggers and the Safdies. PTA would kill them.
I would say the jury is still out on the Safdies, but based on the two films I have seen, if someone stuck a gun to my head and said I had to make a prediction of their future, I would say that they would turn out better than those directors you mention. Good Time is extremely, extremely realistic. Very few films can hit the nuance that they did with that film. Look at Uncut Gems. Some of the actors in that film have never acted a day in their life and turned out performances better than in 99% of last year’s films. They are not easy to watch, but they are very well done. Who knows what the future may bring, but they have shown to be highly skilled directors thus far.

It’s funny but I just noticed that 3 of the 6 titles announced this month have commentary tracks, so I guess Criterion isn’t totally agin’ ‘em. I wish that they had done one for High Sierra, but with all the extras they did provide, I’m not complaining.

I noticed that too. It’s probably the best month for extras in general that I’ve seen in quite some time. The set for The Incredible Shrinking Man is particularly loaded - they covered all their bases with that one.
