Thank you!

I have never watched s film based on work by Faulkner, I'm afraid to do that.
His novels and stories are so great, untouchable almost.

But I should give it try,
thank you very much for this eye opener!

Faulkner didn't write the source novels, he wrote the screenplays.

To Have and Have Not is based on a Hemingway novel, and The Big Sleep is based on a Raymond Chandler novel.

You're right, of course. Sorry for the confusion, but it reminds me in so many ways of what makes a great silent - the imagery, the story that doesn't need words to understand, the overall look and feel of the film. Maybe I just forgot that it has sound in it because it's so beautiful. But I'm embarrassed at my mistake.

Edit: gives me an excuse to revisit it soon!

Oh wow.... I didn't know Faulkner wrote screenplays...
Based on work of colleagues!

Ever the more reason to start watching these two titles!

Thank you very much!

I adore both Kubrick and Pinocchio (even worked on one of the many adaptations, the one with Martin Landau as Gepetto turning into a puppet...) and would love to read more on that.
Sure, here you go.

https://www.indiewire.com/2016/06/st...th-1201682889/

Also, here’s an article from Ian Watson, who worked with Kubrick on the screen story, about how AI was directly a retelling of Pinocchio:

https://web.archive.org/web/20080703...fo/kubrick.htm

“At our first meeting Stanley skated briefly over some of my stories which he had read. Since I hadn’t seen Full Metal Jacket, released three years earlier although not yet on general sale in video shops but only for hire (extremely careful economic management of his movies being quite obsessional with Stanley), he gave me a videotape. Also, a copy of Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio, about the puppet who yearned to be a real boy but who gets into such naughty scrapes, and a book about artificial intelligence by Hans Moravec, Mind Children. The movie was to be a picaresque robot version of Pinocchio, spinning off from the Aldiss story, but the plot-line had bogged down.”

To Have and Have Not is very, very loosely based on the novel, but the movie is still good.

Faulkner writing the screenplay for a Hemingway novel is particularly amusing, given their radically different styles and, shall we say, personal reservations about the other.

I received my copy of The Princess Bride last night and my son and I watched it. This was his first time seeing it. We laughed through the whole thing. But, I must say, I'm a little disappointed in the PQ. It was not bad, but it didn't seem spectacular either. Maybe this is the best the film can look. But it was rather disappointing, that at the 50% off, the price is double that of what other Blu-Ray releases of this film sell for.

But I still like the film.

The film looks excellent, exactly how it should look. You need to take a look at the previous BD, and see how big of an improvement there is. Great contrast, and excellent color reproduction. Short of a 4K UHD release (which I fear Kino may have sniped), it won't get much better than this on BD. Digitally, it is also available in 4K/HDR if you want to check that out.

I don't fear Kino snatching it. I pray they did. Criterion is almost perfect except that poor compression. One of the few times the compression did bother my while watching the presentation. A better compressed UHD would be most welcomed.

The Nikos Papatakis films are showing up on the Channel next month. Maybe that set will finally see the light of day soonish.

Yes!
YES Indeed!

I heard of that for a long time.

Ever the more intriguing that with all the animosity, this script actually got written!

Of course, the famous insight for Hemingway was: "If you got something Hollywood wants, make a deal, ansd then drive up to a river, each at his own side.

They toss over the money, I toss over the the movie rights, get in my car and get the hell out of there as fast as I can...

So I received Othello. There are two cuts. Neither seems to have any particular claim to being the original, as far as I can tell.

So...which do I watch?

Yes indeed!

But that makes it all the more intriguing.

It's going to be my quest / initiation for this summer!
And looking forward to it!

Thank you for all these great and tantalizing info and ideas!

I bought Pickup on South Street and La Piscine from a brick and mortar Barnes & Noble.

I'm glad to have upgraded my DVD of the Fuller film at last.

Honestly? I would say both, because they’re both legitimate Orson Welles cuts that vary in certain shot selections and even vocal performances. But I think most generally would say the 1952 European cut if push came to shove.
