Both cuts in the set, and another called the Italian cut, are all his. The early 90s version prepared by his daughter and only released on Blu-ray in France is not but the differences are small. Daryl Zanuck, who put some of his own money in the film, liked it but said Welles should make it silent with a narration. No wonder he never directed a film for Fox even though they were friends.

I can only watch one cut first though.

I've never seen Othello, in any form. Welles's or otherwise.

In that case, do Shakespeare in the Park first.

I prefer the 1952 version. I actually think it's more coherent, especially the opening scenes.

Always love encouraging new fans to check out classic silent films.
Sadly, Pandora's Box is OOP and its not sure if Criterion have the rights as it seemed Kino had them for a while, but I don't think they have it anymore either.

I just picked up La Piscine, and also All That Jazz. Takes my tally to five for this sale, which is more that I had anticipated - having switched most Criterion buying to the Flash Sales.

There's still a real joy that comes from browsing through the selection in person.

Maybe Memoirs Found in a Bathtub? I could swear I had read somewhere that at one point he wanted to film the Strugatsky brothers novel Hard to Be a God, but went with Roadside Picnic instead.

For example, you used to be able to buy the entire Rolling Stones catalog in 24/192 PCM at various sites. Those are all gone (to the misfortune of people like myself who were late to the party) and not only is a fraction of the catalog available, it's only in 24/48 PCM from dynamics-compressed remasters.
We’re kind of drifting off the original point here, but you’re basically reinforcing it - that the OP’s original comparison falls apart as soon as you start looking at it more than superficially.

That would be a great movie!

In my mind there is something like 'The Congress', which would point towards 'The Futurological Congress'...

Well that's good, I guess. At least I know it looks as good as it should. I've been around long enough to know that sometimes, even with the best PQ possible, a film will just not look spectacular. I think this is one of those films.

There is already a German release of Princess Bride in 4K:

The picture quality is outstanding (it includes Dolby Vision) and offers subtle improvements over the Criterion. The included Blu-ray with the supplements is Region B Locked but it includes all of the bonus features from the U.S. Blu-ray release (not the Criterion). All the menu text is in German, but I had no problem navigating and all of the audio is in English if I remember correctly.

Here is the Amazon link for those interested https://www.amazon.de/The-Princess-B...A3JWKAKR8XB7XF.

And Bill Hunt's review at TDB since it has not been reviewed here yet https://thedigitalbits.com/item/prin...german-4k-2021

Oh nice, didn't even know there was a physical 4K release. Love the cover art for that one too. I think we'll see a 4K release here in the US soon enough too.

Pickup On South Street was my final pickup. Grabbed about 10 titles throughout the month - my largest ever Criterion sale haul. All but Deep Cover were DVD upgrades.

I watched disc one of the Olympic Films. Video is excellent considering the age of the film used. I could not get over the diving competition using a wooden platform and diving into a lake..lol.

It's fun going through that set and seeing how the Olympics evolved over time.
