You could pretty much say that for every single forum thread on this site.

Maybe that depends on how much time you spend on these threads. I don't know.

What I do know is that the scratches are a valid issue. I bought & returned two scratched sets myself. First scratched Criterion BD's I've seen out of 287 purchased to date.

A lot of people mentioned scratches with the Fellini set. I don't think anyone mentioned finding paint chips in the box and discs being stuck together like he did. I wonder if that's because of the heat or something? Regardless, it sounds like he's had a lot of bad luck with the releases he's received.

I'm not sure what conversation we're having here. Discs get scratches. That isn't being denied. A prevalent issue of scratched discs is different.

Just like you've never received a scratched disc prior to this release, others have (and probably had no scratched disc with this set). There's no reason to mention it as if it's a constant, inherent problem.

That I understand. And I even understand questioning quality control if you've received multiple bad sets. Anecdotal evidence says it's just bad luck unfortunately.

I don't think we'll have a box set the degree of Godzilla, Bergman, or Fellini this year. I think we could see the Rohmer set get announced. I think the Bollywood set they're supposedly planning is also some time away. It's possible it could be the speculated Orson Welles set. I'm expecting their first UHD to be announced for either Nov. or Dec., so announcing Citizen Kane would be pretty big, especially if it's also released as part of a set with other Welles films.

The Rohmer set doesn’t quite feel big enough for a timed release with BN sale/Christmas. I can see that coming out early next year, maybe to align with a flash sale? Not that he isn’t a big name, but I think he’s not a name fitting for the non-cinephile audience that gets that late in the year slot.

Kino trying (and not being able to) get TOUCH OF EVIL out for November was interesting and same with the newly announced BLACK MAGIC. But I’m not fully convinced there will be a Welles set. Releases, yes, but a set, not sure. Would there really be enough to add for those that have been following the Welles releases as they came out?

If you can't find a reasonably priced TT edition, German release (Sony) is an excellent alternative. It's English friendly, region free and cheap. That being said, a Criterion release would be truly lovely!

I was coming to speak about the same thing.

I was going to say, if they don't announce it shortly, we likely aren't getting a big box for November, this year.

Well, we got a few, last year. The Bruce Lee box, the Agnes Varda box, The World Cinema Project Vol. 3 box, AND the big Essential Fellini box. Then, the Wong Kar Wai box early this year. Now, we get the Melvin van Peebles box this Fall.

Still, I had hoped for some other big box this November. I still hope for a strong slate. Usually, Nov. is a month of big releases for them.

Right after the October flash sale and just in time for holiday shopping. It should be a big month.

Criterion

I am holding out hope that there will be a Luis Buñuel box set. Prior to the Bergman set, Criterion released A Film Trilogy by Ingmar Bergman. This three-disc set was similar to the Three Films by Luis Buñuel set that came out earlier this year. Just like Bergman, the majority of the Luis Buñuel Region A blu-rays that are still available are the ones leased by Criterion Collection (Three Films by Luis Buñuel, The Exterminating Angel, and Belle du Jour.) Then there are the ones that Criterion has leased out on DVD: Viridiana, Diary of a Chambermaid, and Simon of the Desert. Kino-Lorber has The Milky Way and Death in the Garden, and Cohen Media Group has Tristana. There are a number of great Buñuel films that have never been released, at least in North America: Él (aka This Strange Passion,) Nazarin, The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz, and Los Olivados, to name a few.

Our First 4K Ultra HD Releases

We’re thrilled to announce Criterion’s first 4K Ultra HD releases, a six-film slate that includes Citizen Kane, Menace II Society, The Piano, Mulholland Dr., The Red Shoes, and A Hard Day’s Night. The first of these editions and their special features will be detailed in our November 2021 announcement next week, with others to follow in subsequent months.

The most dazzling debut in cinema history, Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane was Criterion’s first laserdisc release 37 years ago. It now rejoins the library after a long absence, making its first appearance in 4K Ultra HD along with Allen and Albert Hughes’s riveting breakthrough Menace II Society; Jane Campion’s Academy Award–winning The Piano, starring Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin in her breakout role; David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr., a tale of love and jealousy in the city of dreams; Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s singular Technicolor fantasia The Red Shoes; and Richard Lester’s timeless movie musical A Hard Day’s Night, which brought the Beatles’ revolutionary talent and irreverent humor to the big screen.

Each title will be available in a 4K UHD+Blu-ray combo pack including a 4K UHD disc of the feature film as well as the film and its special features on Blu-ray. Select films will be presented in Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos. Stay tuned for more details in our November announcement!
