I’m not complaining about the 4K announcement. I’m honestly very excited for the potential releases, but this news as well as every day that passes by, I see my Kurosawa blu-ray box set slipping away into the void.

I just hope this means we get Pink Flamingos in 4K!

Oh just imagine...

If we're talking Waters, I think at least Hairspray is an inevitability for 4K, especially now that Criterion is in the game

Already got a quick response from Criterion and will be getting a replacement case:

There was a recent error during the assembly of a select number of HIS GIRL FRIDAY Blu-rays, where the two discs were placed in a 1-disc Blu-ray case with one of the discs loose. This has now been corrected and our inventory of HIS GIRL FRIDAY Blu-rays are now packaged with a 2-disc Blu-ray case.

So I bought The Piano and that got a 4k release. Well I also just bought The Devils DVD, so Criterion how about it? Make my day!

Toho is a PITA to deal with, as mentioned here. I would buy a Kurosawa set, Day 1, but at this point I would just take individual upgrades of the unreleased films at this point, starting with Stray Dog first.

From what I remember, most the BD/DVD dual format releases that had clunky cardboard packages were three discs and had thicker booklets. Since most of Criterion's regular Blu-ray releases are just one disc, their new 4K/BD combo releases will mostly be just two disc. Two disc plastic cases are not much thicker than their one disc cases.

There were plenty of regularly packaged dual-format editions.

If the price gets jacked up a bit, but it means they can indulge in things like the occasional Red River/Picnic at Hanging Rock megapackages, hallelujah. I personally LOVED having books included, and feels like that went out the window once they had to go back to separate editions.

I think the "select titles in HDR" is good indication that some filmmakers and/or archivists don't feel that HDR should be applied to their films (or the films they restored for the latter case). Perhaps Criterion will adapt the policy of keeping HDR exclusively for titles where the directors/DPs want it, or where the next best available authority (restorers/Scorsese) feel that HDR wouldn't mess with how a particular film is "supposed" to look.

I think that’s certainly true. Barry Sonnenfeld was just on Lee Kline’s podcast The Dead Pixel and he went off big time on 4k acquisition and HDR processing in particular.

He also hates panning. I love him, but if you read his book, he loves to complain. Also sounds like he doesn't fully understand it.

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath. Changes of these nature usually are implemented if the company gets called out or receives some sort of criticism. Unfortunately, that's just not happening enough or if at all. Criterion has no reason to believe they're doing anything wrong. Essentially, looking at it from their perspective, why should they change? Most reviewers tend to make no mention of their hit or miss encoding/compression. Then we have your typical label apologists/fanboys who think Criterion can do no wrong. Setting those aside, we're still left with a bunch of people that probably don't even know, notice or give too much priority to those type of issues. Over at the thread of another label, I stated that I prioritized good A/V and everything that entails over special features and based on the responses you would think I was speaking Japanese or something. Most of them were happy enough or would rather have a slipcover and loads of special features.
Anyway, this is just my opinion on the matter.

I think it was MifuneFan who described how the negative reaction to the three disc digipacks for the Blu-ray/DVD packs led to the creation of the 3-disc plastic case.

Maybe wishful thinking, but I feel like the omission of a Kurosawa film in this inaugural 4K group just signals a forthcoming collection even more. And once everyone's bought that, the 4K editions will follow.

That wasn't the first time Sonnenfeld made comments of that nature.

Yeah, Sonnenfeld will tell everyone he meets how much HDR is a gimmick and how he was forced by Netflix to use it, and how hard it was, blah blah blah. He whines a lot.

At least the press release implies the UHD disc itself will be extras-free, so no worry about lengthy extras putting a squeeze on the main feature. And of course there won't be the worldwide audio and subtitle tracks taking up any room either (although I guess that will just give them an excuse to avoid using BD-100s).

So with that in mind, it will be especially shameful if the compression is garbage.
