Exactly. I thought there were rumors of a UG 4K, anyway??

Are you really Adam Sandler? I certainly thought most of the talk here about Uncut Gems 4K was ...

(Edit: Though TBH I might have confused it with the poster for Big Daddy. )

Seeing the email come in about 4K made me do a double take…triple take even…couldn’t believe my eyes. I am so in on all of these…especially Mulholland Drive. Hopefully their compression gets a serious upgrade as well.

Yeah, count me as a negative on this one. If prices go up to support the cost of making a 4K disc, I think the net result is more people just throw up their hands and move to streaming. Blu Ray already looks great, and also seems increasingly like a niche market already. This will accelerate that trend. Obviously this is just a guess on my part. Who knows what will happen.

As well, to me, this simply means that Criterion is stretched thin, putting money, time, and effort into re-releasing movies that already look fine on Blu Ray, rather than transferring their old DVDs to Blu Ray, which really does make a big difference in the quality. More people working on Citizen Kane means fewer people working on Trouble in Paradise, as I see it.

Welcome the all-streaming future, is the real message, I think.

Once again, just my two cents.

Unfortunately, now, it looks like the BDs will ONLY be available in 4K combo packs, which means an average Criterion will now be like 70 bucks a title or something, LOL. Their regular BDs are already 40, on average.

Anyway, glad for the people who've wanted this so bad.

It might get a straight 4K release from A24 eventually, but A24 doesn't release a lot of 4Ks. The last 4K they released was Midsommar Director's Cut through their A24 store. It looks like they'll be releasing The Green Knight in 4K, but no plans on Uncut Gems 4K yet. Criterion had the opportunity to release it in 4K, but they're going to release it on a Blu-ray disc.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing The Red Shoes in 4k, that's top of my list, but I'm sure I'll buy whichever they announce for November just to get a look at the way they handle 4k and HDR for myself.

Just as a reminder to the people who are already complaining, when adjusted for inflation, Criterion's DVDs were $65-70 when they first came out. At the time, they were...$40. (Let's not talk about LDs!) Sure, I'd prefer that Criterion keep prices where they are. If the prices increase, whatever. I'd imagine a lot of people reading this will just hold out for the half-off sales anyway.

Received His Girl Friday/The Front Page from Amazon today and 1 disc was a floater because somebody tried to cram both into a single-disc case. No amount of pressure allows me to get both discs to sit in the single tray spot.

Well, those titles announced on 4K UHD? Of course. Criterion (actually everyone) can’t keep making 3 individual skus. Let’s not panic over price point yet. I’m thinking most 4K/BD releases will be around $50 list… And if you ever pay full pop for a Criterion title, or anything, you just need to learn how to shop.

It would also be sweet if Criterion can go ahead and add a 4K streaming feature to their streaming service.

Hate to say you’re wrong, but “You’re wrong.” Once you get a quality 4K setup and watch a good 4K disc, you’ll understand the hype.

Seems like we get this announcement instead of a boxset.

I've had a lot of re-seals from amazon lately. Being in the UK I can't do a lot about it, they don't even allow replacements so it's live with it or rebuy at the current price so it makes bargain hunting very difficult. Seems like most of them have some kind of minor damage, I don't know if I'm just being unlucky or if they're deliberately sending the rejects out again and hoping people don't complain a second time.

This is a crucial bit that most people who claim that 4K UHD isn't all that seem to be missing. Granted, it doesn't take $5000 to get a great 4K setup but I'd imagine there's a whole bunch of those folks watching shit on budget / entry level 4K panels without HDR, while expecting to see a major difference in picture quality.

Happy for everyone who wants 4K, but I'm weary. I have no use for a 4K disc or interest in upgrading, so I'm hoping they release it as a blu-ray only as well or, at least, don't charge extra for the 4K (very doubtful).

Let the psychological stages commence...

1. "Ohhh....Citizen Kane, The Red Shoes, Mulholland Drive in 4K!"

2. "My standard Blu-rays of these movies look great, though, and I'm tired of double-dipping for the same films all of the time. Enough is enough already."

3. "I'll revisit Mulholland Drive enough to merit an upgrade, but will I really rewatch Citizen Kane and The Red Shoes enough to merit spending the money again?"

4. "Hmmm... Actually...the color Powell/Pressburger movies will probably look fantastic in 4K."

5. "Okay, okay... Since I hate having money, I'll probably buy them all as they are released."

Criterion hasn't stopped DVD upgrades while releasing new titles, why would that stop if they start releasing 4K titles? This is an odd complaint.

This wasn't a re-seal though. It had the standard plastic wrap and the blue sticker on front noting the bonus disc even. Appears to be an error on the manufacturing/packaging end.

Production problems at Criterion HQ, I received 2 sets of Essential Fellini that just had print errors, dents, tears, sticky discs, scratched discs, etc.

I have a $1,000 55" Sony Bravia 4K set with HDR capabilities, Dolby Vision capabilities, and amazing black levels, along with a Sony 4K player and a nice Sony sound bar/subwoofer.

4K UHD is pretty amazing, I'll say that.

Still, it's not like, "Yay! I can finally enjoy this movie now!"

Standard Blu-rays and high definition still hit the sweet spot for me. 4K is just icing on the cake.
