Yikes. I show up there every once in awhile, but overall it's a hot mess. Feels like everyone is walking on egg shells there and most can't really say what they want to. They don't offer much as this site provides what they try to provide ten fold, but they do have some good users there, but again it feels like it's not the safest environment.

You're right. So maybe the rights of the film have gone to Ramsay? All I know is that the film should be released and I feel like it's got a chance for Criterion.

I’ve never had any issues with the group in my experience

I think it’s probably a sense of weariness with the cover being criticised as it’s been gone over so many times.

I was responding to a post about the cover that the admin himself posted! Not like I brought the topic up. Just weird really. I’d get if I was rude or something.

Remember when that site "forced" people to sign up using their real name? I created a fake real name to game their idiotic system - I think they've since dropped that requirement - but I haven't posted there in over a decade.

And it's not like it's a radical opinion. I'm okay with that cover, but hardly think it's beyond criticism - lots of people expected more than a letter. Sounds like you pressed someone's hot button. Or maybe that's just SOP there.

If you're looking for something else, Criterion Considered and The Criterion Channel Club are both good groups. (Note: I'm just a regular member, not a group owner, moderator, etc.) There is a gatekeeper-ish type who seems to post in every thread and comes across as a bit of a know-it-all, but they're great groups in general.

I just lurk there now and then, mostly when this site was down earlier this year. That one Mod was throwing his weight around in the Kino threads. There they have that stupid thing they tried to do here where they have a "Kino announcement thread", and a "Talk shit about Kino thread" and if someone dared to even mention something Kino related in the former that wasn't about an announcement (it didn't even have to be something critical or negative in any way), he was threatening suspensions.

Jack Dorsey was a MOD at the HTF? Huh.

GQ interview, although there's no mention of Infernal Affairs.

I never thought Infernal Affairs aged well (With its editing style, music, and CGI). However, the story is worthy of giving a check at least once. Hopefully now that Tony Leung is getting some attention with Shang Chi, I do hope some of his films will get some recognition in the US other than his Wong Kar Wai flicks. His John Woo films are also pretty well known (Although Hard Boiled should definitely get a 4K restoration and Bullet in the Head needs a Blu-ray release given with the best version to exist since I heard that the negatives were destroyed or something). A City of Sadness, Cyclo, Eagle Shooting Heroes, and Chinese Odyssey are worthy of a release IMO. As far as I know, there isn't any company or boutique label that releases Hong Kong films regularly or often. Criterion started releasing Hong Kong films again about 2 years ago with Police Story and has been releasing one or two titles a year now.

I know this has been asked a trillion times before, but when are the Criterion flash sales?

October/February. I have never seen a flash sale happen in November.

According to my order history:

2/14/18
10/17/18
3/5/19
10/15/19
2/25/20
10/20/20
2//23/21

So at least for my relatively short time in buying from their flash sales, the Fall sale appears to be a little more consistent, right in the middle of October over the previous three years.

History of Criterion Flash Sales (all on Tuesdays except where otherwise noted)

Watched The Ascent a couple of nights ago. It was a blind buy during a recent sale, read a synopsis and it sounded like something that would interest me. Thankfully my instincts were spot on..I feel this title has shot up into my top 10 Criterions list. It's a bleak, intimate, almost documentary like depiction of war at the most base level. The ending really got me..but I should have expected nothing more in a film such as this. I'm going to get into the supplements when I have some time.

I have grown to absolutely love Russian/Soviet cinema. I don't own a lot, but what I have I really cherrish.

Not really sure where to ask this and to create a thread for every movie would be overkill, but how likely do you think it is Criterion (or another boutique label) will pick some of the following movies up for release?:

Dersu Uzala (1975; there are some European blu-ray releases, but not English-friendly)
Red Beard (1965; there is a Japanese blu-ray release)
Harlan County U.S.A. (1976; there is a Criterion DVD release)
Fires on the Plain (1959; there is a Criterion DVD release)
Stray Dog (1949)
Trial on the Road (1986; can't even find a DVD release anywhere)
Kapo (1960; there's a Japanese blu-ray release, but not English-friendly)
Edge of the City (1957; can't find any release)
Wag the Dog (1997)
Turtles Can Fly (2004)
A Time for Drunken Horses (2000)
