I always appreciate some alliteration, but I'd argue that this post is more pompous and pretentious than the presumed pontificators you're prattling on about.

Criterion's doing just fine as is, and I feel no obligation or interest in subscribing to their channel. I own a decent number of their physical releases that appeal to me, and don't care one hair about whether or not that meets some imaginary, fart-sniffing mark of "fully" supporting them. Period, full stop, yadda yadda whatever.

A fair point. I use a Roku. They are pretty cheap and good - especially on Black Friday.

It's compatible with Amazon FireTV. I buy a lot of discs (as anyone can see) but the app features so much stuff they have the rights to but will likely never get released. And they have a great and varied selection of constantly rotating titles licensed from other distributors. I've been a day one subscriber and I end up using it more than I actually get to watch my discs, but that's because I try to prioritize viewing titles that are expiring from the platform that will otherwise be difficult to see elsewhere (for free anyway). Trying to find more balance in my streaming-to-disc ratio though.

I've been subscribed to the Criterion Channel (and their previous iterations) since their start, but I don't think I've even opened the app in a year. I find that most things on the Channel that stream in HD but were not physically released by Criterion are available on disc from someone in the world (even from labels in the US), and I'd rather just get that. I can't deal with the picture quality of streams anymore, it feels like a wasted viewing. I have gigabit internet so no issue there, but I like fine grain and streams really don't prioritize that, at least I can't think of a stream that has ever looked as marvelous as a good Blu-ray encode. I also don't watch more recent films so perhaps streaming quality of those aren't bad.

You can download the app to any Smart TV, or there's Roku, FireStick, AppleTV, you can get it on your phone and cast to an AppleTV or Chromecast. I'm surprised it's not available on your PlayStation because it's pretty much available everywhere else I've looked.

Looking for opinions on Onibaba & Kuroneko as I’m thinking of blind buying them.

I love having an amazing array of movies at my fingertips with the Channel while also knowing that the money from my subscription is going toward supporting those physical releases we all love so much. It is pretty clear that the Channel has driven some of those very releases. I don't think the Marlon Riggs Blu-ray set happens without the Channel, for example.
People who don't support the monthly lease costs of Criterion's office, don't fully support Criterion. Simple as that. I don't think any Criterion disc or streaming service happens without the monthly lease cost.

This forum should all rally around and cover the monthly lease cost for Criterion's office. I will let you get the ball rolling with the first payment, DBH. Show us lower non streaming channel schmucks how it is done.

I decided to grab this given B&N's standard $50 price tag on it, and also took advantage of the 50% off on Arrow titles as well (got Gas Food Lodging and Scalpel, which have both been on my "want to buy" list for awhile now—my B&N was surprisingly well-stocked with Arrow stuff).

One of Fassbinder's best, and oddly very overlooked. Also more positive than most of the films he made.

I agreed to be Mulaney’s child’s godfather. I misread the name when I agreed. Now I’m stuck.

Ah, that sucks. All of Mulvaney's family are variations of Jon. My goddaughter, the little tyke, is Joan, his wife is Joon, his brother is Lil Jon,and so forth. Sometimes I get Christmas cards from them, and they just initial it "J" and I honestly have no idea who sent it, but I'm glad they remember me.

You really can't own one without the other, honestly. And since I own both I can't in good conscience not own The Naked Island, so I had my local B&N order it for me last night.

But really though, they're both keepers and despite popular opinion I prefer Kuroneko...pretty creepy ghost tale.

Dude, I think I can beat that. I'm close with Peter Becker's family and am actually paying the cost of his kids' college to fully show my support for Criterion. I also offered to pay for the college costs for Mulvaney's kids, but the guy is so caked up, living so large, that he laughed me off. He said with the money he's making from his gun-running operation on the side, it would be like asking to cover the college cost of Jeff Bezos' kid.

I live outside the US, so I'd presumably have to hassle with a VPN and sideloading the app...might get around to it someday, but I have local streaming services with tons of movies I want to watch too.

Though only because he wasn't allowed to complete the final three planned episodes, unfortunately. But I agree it's one of his best works, for certain; a masterpiece, and what does exist is indeed more uplifting (overall) than the majority of his work.
