Well its that time of year again. Time to break out The Ice Storm for annual Turkey night. Oh wait, all my blu-rays are in storage and I'm about to move overseas. Well, for those watching the movie on this day, enjoy.

Neither is consistent at how they package items -- esp for smaller orders.

For larger order, I'd say B&N since they are generally mailed from a central warehouse and more likely to get all items at once. Amazon seems more likely to split up orders into multiple packages

Default Uncut Gems Criterion issue

Anyone else notice the trailer on the Uncut Gems blu ray is not the theatrical trailer but the trailer for the blu ray release? The original theatrical trailer was a red band trailer. You’d think Criterion could get it together and do a check to make sure they included the right item. Doubt they would issue a replacement because of a wrong trailer, but I still thinks it’s irritating.

Does it not include multiple trailers? Criterion lists it on the back cover, and on their product page as "Trailers" which would imply more than one.

According to Svet, here are the trailers included on the release:

Quote:
Theatrical Trailer - original theatrical trailer for Uncut Gems. In English, not subtitled. (3 min).

Elara Trailer - DVD and Blu-ray trailer for Uncut Gems. In English, not subtitled. (1 min).

Well Citizen Kane is somewhere over the Atlantic now on its way to me in the UK. I'm assuming, even though it doesn't mention international orders, that Criterion will ship the replacement here too. Glad I was buying it for the 4k so I'll still be able to watch it straight away.

Bought two today. This months haul to date. All but CK bought in store at Barnes and Noble. Hard not to buy 10 every time I go in that place. Probably getting one or two more from Amazon.

I got these from the Amazon sale:

I had a coupon, so it made it worthwile, even with VAT and Amazon charging a higher shipping price nowadays. I haven't received Citizen Kane (1941) yet, but the others thankfully arrived in great condition to Sweden.

I've never even owned Citizen Kane (1941) on Blu-ray before, so I'm double dipping on this set and the Warner one and it feels great going to 4K UHD directly. Too bad about the video mistake, but at least it didn't affect the 4K disc. I also haven't seen the film in many, many years. It's really time for a rewatch.

Mulholland Dr. (2001) is something I'm really happy over to have in 4K UHD now. Also ordered the Studio Canal one, because why not?

Eureka's Blu-ray release of Onibaba (1964) has been with a while, but I wanted to get this one too.

As for Devi (1960), this Blu-ray looks like a huge step up if you compare to the old DVDs out there. Such a good film that I look forward to rewatching in much better quality.

Hello my American friends,

could you please tell me if or how difficult it is to source mint Criterion Collection copies from a B&N store? The question applies to the digipaks in slipboxes and other non-plastic case packagings, obviously.
The reason I'm asking is as follows: A friend lives in the US (Austin, TX, to be precise) and she agreed to pick up some of the CC editions I want. However she's not into collecting and even though I told her to carefully check for crushed corners, dings, and scratches, it would be reassuring to know from fellow collectors how the B&N staff handles their products.
Of course I understand every store is different, but maybe some general observations can be made. From what I've seen in shopping videos, the shelves in the B&N stores look spacious and the items are not crammed. It shouldn't be too hard to find copies in fine shape, should it?
Hopefully she manages to pick up "The Grand Budapest Hotel", "Fantastic Mr. Fox", "Shoah", "Marriage Story", and "Parasite" for me. There're tons of others I'd like to own, but money's always an issue and I can't ask her to get them all for me.
I hope I can go on a shopping spree at B&N one day myself. Maybe it's for the better I can't, otherwise I would be broke in a matter of minutes. ;-)

Thanks in advance!

I am getting very tired of Criterion and they terrible QC. yet again, another scratched disc, this time Menace to Society I'm sure the movie will play but this is getting ridiculous. The disc wasn't even loose.

I'm going to limit my Criterion purchases because I've been receiving more and more scratched discs and chasing for a refund is getting tiresome. These Criterion sets run a premium and you would think they would be in immaculate condition. I had just returned two sets of Once Upon a Time in China, two Wong Kar Wai Sets , a Fellini Box set, and a slew of other Criterion movies because they had ridiculous amounts of scratches. This shouldn't be happening. I've received movies in much more beat up shape from WB, Disney, Etc. without any scratches. This seems to be a criterion manufacturing and packaging issue.

I've never had to return a movie from any other company...

I'm not a picky person and if it's a small scratch I don't care much, but this shouldn't be happening. I've bought directly from Criterion, in-store at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, but it doesn't matter. Still scratches.

Menace to Society? Wow. How ironic.

I've bought digipacks in-store at B&N, and overall would say that the vast majority of the copies I've handled were in "fine shape." Granted, we all have our own definition of what that means; as a collector, I look for an obviously "new" product, but can accept the odd minor mark or ding. Your threshold may be different.

Where B&N seriously let's the side down is the egregious use of "spider wrap" security devices on most of the larger box sets, which are usually put on far too tight and dig in on all sides of the packaging - leaving unacceptable dents. For this reason alone I avoid buying them in the store.

Arrow Mulholland Dr. on Criterion 4K.

Before the Barnes & Noble Criterion 50% off sale wraps up in a couple days, I will update my existing copies of both Citizen Kane and Mulholland Dr. with the 4K versions that have just been released by Criterion.

I know there was a technical issue with the Blu-ray disc in Criterion’s 4K UHD package of Citizen Kane and will use their replacement program if need be.

But, are there any known issues with Criterion’s Mulholland Dr. 4K package? I was wondering about that because I went to two different Barnes & Noble stores and could not find a copy of the 4K package at either location. (Citizen Kane, of course, was also not on their shelves.)

I just want to know if I should expect anything unusual once I receive the newest copy of Mulholland Dr.

On the plus side, during this sale, I have already picked up, in-store, the Criterion 4K versions of Menace II Society and the terrific Uncut Gems, plus thirteen other Criterion Blu-ray packages.

Just back from a local B&N. Hadn't been for a few weeks, and was surprised to find that the Media Department had completely disappeared - giving way to more general retail space. Not quite the end of an era, though, as there were two permanent fixtures in the newly configured area for physical media: One for LPs, and a new double-wide wall fixture full of Criterion titles. A reasonable assumption, then, that the only customers buying physical media in sufficient quantities to justify a permanent presence in-store anymore are vinyl collectors, and Criterion buffs.

There are two other stores within easy driving distance, so I wonder if they will follow suit? Anyway, I was glad to see Criterion had survived the changes. Even if it begs the question: Who is buying Criterion at full price the other 10 months of the year?
