Criterion well-represented in Beaver's annual end-of-year summary, taking top spots in the Top 10 lists for BD and 4K with Mirror and The Red Shoes respectively - amongst other entries across the categories reviewed.

Always an enjoyable read; I like and admire Beaver's sheer enthusiasm for physical media.

Happy New Year everyone!

Just want to wish everyone a Happy New Year, and also a Happy 101st birthday to The Phantom Carriage! It was released in Sweden on January 1st, 1921.

Right at the start of the month so today you’ll see a list of titles newly arrived this month and another headed Leaving January 31.

Notice where it says "Book Now" above where it says Blu-ray (and DCP and 35mm). Blu-ray in this case refers to the blu-ray a theater can rent to show the film in their theater. They do that with all their listings.

Also there is a newsletter that is emailed every month to announce the new titles. For example, just got one this morning to announce what is new for January. It links to here

On the bottom of that page (left hand side) is where you can sign up for their emails.

Yeah, I got that email today but this is my first new month (signed up like a week ago), so not sure how it all works yet.

That newsletter doesn't seem to include the departing titles. And it's all the way down the bottom of the channel's home page, which takes a lot of scrolling and waiting for things to load.

Anyone have any input on the Zazie dans le métro releases?

It says Currently Unavailable at the site listing which means more likely it is just between printings and not OOP. When they lose the rights it will say OOP, like the listing for The Third Man.

You can just bookmark this:

https://www.criterionchannel.com/leaving-january-31

It seems like they just change the month, and day. So february will presumably be:

https://www.criterionchannel.com/leaving-february-28

The subreddit for the channel also have people that make a list of everything leaving every month

https://www.reddit.com/r/CriterionCh...nd_of_january/

It links to a letterbox, which you can sort into a list

Quick question for any mods: is there a reason this thread is now "stickied" under the "Blu-Ray Movies: North America" section instead of under "Studios and Distributors" with the other boutique labels?

Obviously can access it here as well, but I think it fits better under "Studios" where it's historically been located. Also seems like the thread has been quieter since it was moved.

I hadn't seen any discussion, so just thought I would ask. Also, Happy New Year to all!

When you see that on the Janus site, it means Blu is among the formats they offer to make a screening happen. It's not directly linked to Criterion's consumer-oriented Blu-rays.

Apologies if this has already been asked, but is there an illustration this year?

No. There haven't been any drawings since the artist, Jason Polan, that used to do them passed (1/17/20).

Interesting. So they send you a Blu-ray to screen a film? Man, I'd host a screening and pay whatever needs to be paid to get a Blu-ray of Hunter in the Dark, even if it's just the film on a disc.

Either way, I hope the next batch of announcements include Cure.

You're renting the film, not keeping it, no matter the format. Just before the pandemic -- it's probably changed -- I was looking into screening films and the costs were $100-$500.

Interesting. So even the Blu-ray you would have to return? If not, I'd pay the $500 just to have Hunter in the Dark on Blu-ray. It's easily one of my favorite movies of all time. Hell, I'd even pay Criterion's manufacturing costs to produce the discs/art/boxes to get the film on Blu-ray.

Rentals are how movie theaters and screenings have operated forever.

Hiroshima mon amour was presented on blu-ray in some movie houses when it toured several years ago. It looked great. I'd have to look it up but I know there have been others from Janus.

Blu-rays/DVD’s are also for schools to show.

I have seen the oppo logo before quite a few films playing at my local art house. Maybe for a smaller studio sending an entire hard drive is not as cost efficient as just sending a disc.
