I have no idea what the original BD's source was. If it turns out there's no 4K scan/restoration of it available, then obviously there's little choice for Criterion there. Extras were lacking on Warner's BD too, so either way, it's a good pick-up for Criterion.
I'm not questioning your logic, and I hope it is a 4K/UHD release. But I have seen them release movies on Blu-Ray that were already on Blu-Ray. All About Eve is but one example. I was hoping you had some insider knowledge.

All About Eve also came out before they went 4K. So this could be a different situation, but we will find out when the announcement gets made by Criterion.

True. It may very well be 4K and I hope it is. I was simply pointing out that it might not be and was hoping for some inside information. I guess we'll all know soon enough.

Yeah, I was about to post that. Plus it's from Fox, so different than a Warner title, who we know Criterion can license 4K rights from.

If anyone is wanting, A Raisin in the Sun, and doesn’t want to wait for a sale. My Barnes had it on display with a 30% off sticker and the Barnes membership card worked and took an additional 10% off.

Generally they will announce the titles on the 14th, if the 15th falls on a Saturday

watched beyond the valley of the dolls last night. love it. fun and full of energy. thematically similar to valley of the dolls, but tonally way different. it was also my first russ meyer movie and sad to find out his presence on blu-ray is almost non-existent outside of this release.

The Russ Meyer estate stubbornly refuses to release his films on BluRay or license them out to any of the boutiques. And Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! is long OOP.

20th Century Fox funded and distributed the film originally (I don't believe Meyer or his estate have any stake/ownership in it).

That's correct. I also believe I read somewhere that Fox told Criterion if they wanted Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, they had to take Valley of the Dolls, but I'm not 100% certain of that.

I took a shot and e-mailed Criterion and actually got a response! They DID get my snapped-in-half disc and have my info. The rest: "The first round of replacement CITIZEN KANE Blu-ray 1 discs - including yours - are shipping out now, throughout January.

Please follow up with us if you do not receive your replacement by the end of January and we can investigate further at that time."

The previous tweet made by Greg Ruth before this one says that they were filming something for the Channel.

Is the commentary for Oscar Micheux's Body and Soul that's available on the Criterion Channel not included on the Kino/BFI Blu-rays? Where did it come from?

I believe it came from the Criterion Paul Robeson box.

So I was thinking about this yesterday. Do you think it's possible Criterion held off on starting 4K until they got their bigger box sets out the way? Stuff like Fellini, Wong Kar-wai, and perhaps even the Bergman set? Put another way, if Criterion started doing 4K releases in say 2019, would the reception to an all Blu-ray release for the Fellini set have been the same? Even when it was announced people were disappointed it wasn't at least partially in 4K, so imagine the reaction if it came out after they actually started releasing some? Perhaps it's too much of a conspiracy theory, but it wouldn't surprise me if they decided to get these big collections out of the way first, before finally transitioning to the format.

I also think it's telling that an individual release of La Strada was released in November, at the onset of their 4K lineup. Without that Fellini set existing, it's very possible Criterion would have done a 4K release instead. Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but time will tell if they do the same for any eventual release of Nights of Cabiria (which has a 4K release internationally), and any other major title from these box sets.
