If a title is to receive a blu or 4K upgrade, they will update the screenshots on the web page of the title early in the morning on the day of announcements. Yet I can't seem to find any recently updated pages so far.

I'm 100% all in for Criterion partnering with Hulu/Neon, Netflix, and any other streaming platform for physical releases.

I’m sure that they got the rights for The Third Man back and that they’re working on a UHD release, but I’d be surprised if they announced it so soon after Citizen Kane. I think we might have to wait a while for it.

EDIT:
Never mind, just saw ShellOilJunior’s post.

How so? DVD had more lines of resolution, but terrible compression to start, and Laserdisc had much better (and still viable today) uncompressed audio that bests DVD to this day. Each had a strength and a weakness.

I think it is a valid criticism. I attempted to say the exact same thing a year or so ago and it went over like a lead balloon, so I'm not surprised at the consensus reaction here. In addition to the releases that deal with today's pressing social issues, Criterion has also released several brand new films that are available via Netflix where the stream quality is pristine.

I still like Criterion and enjoy their output. Other labels have considerably upped their game, as well, so I would think that goes into an evaluation of their 2021 output.

I don't understand how the adjective "lazy" comes about when describing his opinion. And the projection (e.g., "what he's really saying is...) is quite simply not fair. That, to me, is what's lazy. That quip should be retired.

Just say what you mean to say and stop hiding behind coded phrases then.

It's not "projection", it's a fair reading because Mr. Tooze didn't use to hide his political affiliations on Twitter. The users who criticized him were spot-on. Please read this thread.

I don't think an opinion like that, as was stated, is exclusive to people on the right. I share his opinion and stand somewhere on the left.

someone above also said that Tooze didn't write that, so idk.

It didn't fall on deaf ears here. (Full disclosure: I do own the entire Criterion Collection). I don't mean to stir the pot in any way, but, yes, Criterion isn't arriving at their selection process in a 100% organic manner. Their selection process has been nudged by critical outside voices and they have made conscious attempts to be more inclusive to Black filmmakers.

Fortunately, I do like the Black films they have announced amd released such as Love Jones and Love & Basketball, so whatever irks I may have about their selection process, the end product hasn't diminished any. I mean, I'd much rather rather have most 90s and 2000s Black cinema over flat out boring modern stuff like Forgiveness of Blood.

I think the issue is, one person’s “deserving release” is not someone else’s. There aren’t measurable facets to determine what’s great, I know there’s a user that haunts this forum that will disagree. So arguing about what “deserves” a release always feels like a moot point. I’m sure there are movies that I don’t like that are in the collection, I don’t have the entire catalogue memorized, but I’m not going to say to take them out because they go against my sensibilities.

I have several questions if you don't mind...

How do you store them?
What do you do for a living?
How long did it take you to catch up to the new releases?
Do you have a watched/unwatched pile?

The real question we should all be asking.

Will the new releases be announced before this thread gets shut down?
