I am so mad *^%$^&*&^%!! hasn't been announced! Because of that I'll....umm...I'll just buy Miracle in Milan and Round Midnight from this month since I already own For All Mankind. I'll put The Girl Can't Help It and Walker on my wish list and check out Eyimofe to find out what that movie is like. Yep, another crappy, sucky month from those Criterion B*******!

This months slate made me again wish that Criterion would put out a physical release of Barbet Schroeder’s MORE, especially if they can get a Floyd member or two (three seems, um, unlikely) while they are still kicking.

I have More in The Early Years box set. I think I kept the release where the company pressing it forgot to put the subtitles on both More and La Vallee. And yep, I can see two members showing up but the one with the initials RW is probably somewhere raging at something that is giving him some form of butt-hurt.

The absence of The Cure officially confirms that the leaker we had around here a couple of months ago was full of shit, right?

I was going to buy Walker on DVD the last two sales. Glad I held out for the blu ray. Super excited for this one.

Criterion announcements have been interesting for me lately. Even though I'm likely to buy a good 80% of them or so, there aren't a lot of announcements so far this year and going back to the middle of last year that have really actually gotten me excited, although I have to acknowledge part of that has been due to already knowing certain titles were in the pipeline, it was just a matter of when. The only titles I would say really excited me to hear were The Piano (when first announced as part of the initial 4K run), Written on the Wind, and especially Boat People. Yet I'll most likely end up purchasing everything that isn't a documentary. So excellent hit-to-miss ratio, but low on the enthusiasm meter for me. I'm sure I'll enjoy Miracle in Milan more than my initial reaction to the idea of Italian neorealism mixed with surreal whimsy sounds, but, again, that was one of the titles we already knew was coming, so that tempers the energy a bit.

I only ever ripped the CDs for this set (I probably play stuff from this at home more than anything else I have), but I never realized how in depth the DVD material is! I had no idea they even include the two films. That set is a real jewel.

Walker's blu-ray upgrade gives me hope that another Universal Criterion dvd-only release, Missing, will get a Blu upgrade. They were released 8 months apart in 2008.

Not seen any of the April release titles. The Girl Can't Help It and 'Round Midnight definitely sound like my thing.

Maybe that leaker from a few months ago (fettucine) has now replaced the annual clue illustrations that we used to have. I still prefer the visual clues rather than the obvious leaks though.

It also contains the rarely screened, "Red Sun", starring Mifune, Charles Bronson, Alain Delon, and Ursula Andress. That's a wild genre-bender for you. A samurai meets spaghetti western hybrid complete with all the visual tropes you'd expect from either genre. I'm positive it was a huge influence on Tarantino, especially "Django Unchained" and "Kill Bill". Well worth seeing.

Is it though? I caught a DCP screening for it at a local independent cinema back in 2017, so it can’t be that rare.

I actually wrote Criterion years ago to suggest 'Round Midnight'. You're all welcome.

It is, indeed. Perhaps becoming less so, now.

It hasn't been available in the US officially since the VHS days. There's never been an official DVD or blu ray in the US, TV airings are rare, and theatrical showings even more rare. I imported a Japanese blu ray several years ago.

For years, it was very difficult to even see, much less in decent quality.

A StudioCanal BD was released a few years ago in the UK, and that may well be the first (and so far, only) truly quality release of it.

I've been hoping for years that Criterion would eventually release it.

Official US DVD from WAC (2019):

Japan region free release (2012) is still attainable, even from Amazon US:

Digital on iTunes/Apple, Amazon Prime, and others.

I used to go to the movies a lot with my aunt, but she also didn't want to go to foreign films, because she was blind and wouldn't understand a thing if it wasn't in English.

I broke down and bought the (fantastic) Indicator region B locked release. (you can get it for 8GBP right now with their 5x for 40 sale)

Not sure what the deal is with rights to Costa Garvas' movies, I'd think Z would be priority for a blu upgrade.
