And the best farting movie.

But seriously, let's not troll the guy who wants something life-affirming/feel-good from The Criterion Collection thread. (Although I do agree that more often than not something grotesque filled with misery and death can be life-affirming and feel-good and La Grande Bouffe from Arrow Video is surely a fantasic, one-of-a-kind movie.)

Would be nice to see more Chaplin, and also Minnie & Moskowitz (big time on my wish list), Inland Empire, and Baby Face (which will probably end up being a WAC release when it hits blu-ray, but it could happen w/ Criterion maybe...).

Just another random wishlist item - Outrage (1950, Ida Lupino): The lack of supplement about Ida Lupino on High Sierra release led me to this idea. Criterion already released two Dorothy Arzner films, so why not tackle another rare female director from the old Hollywood? And certainly there is a lot to discuss on this little gem about a rape survivor. Imprint recently released it in Autrailia with the very good-looking "2K scan from the original negative" supplied by Paramount, so I think there is a chance.

Just throwing this out into the universe, but a bluray release of Michael Haneke's Cache would make my month. I'd love to see Criterion pull that off.

No need to announce it, no need to buy -- it'll just be left on everyone's front step

Hopefully they also drop off Lost Highway in the same manner.

Tampopo is the first and only blu ray I immediately destroyed after viewing. Self indulgent drivel. That poor turtle could have at least died for a better director.

It is unfortunate about the turtle, but Tampopo is an amazing film.

Inspired to browse through my Criterion collection, I find that I apparently don't really lean toward 'life-affirming' films that don't leave you depressed, but I took the liberty of browsing through your Criterion collection and this is what I've come up with:

Good Morning by Yasujiro Ozu

Ozu at his most charming, certainly, and almost surely the best movie ever in which farts are a key part of the plot. If you don't feel better after watching this movie, there may be something wrong with you.

The Marseille Trilogy starring Marcel Pagnol

Probably one of the most lyrical trilogies you'll find, with a deep appreciation and exploration of social rituals told through the story of Fanny and Marius. Films that are full of life--specifically the regional seaside life it depicts.

La poison by Sascha Guitry

One of the most overlooked films and filmmakers in the Criterion Collection, in my opinion, this film, with a great central performance from Michel Simon, is pure dark comedy, the story of a man trying to permanently figure his way out of a marital problem, to say the least, without any repercussions. The subject matter is dark, but told in such a spirited way, in the sense of Arsenic and Old Lace. Also a bit of (or more than a bit of) social critique.

A Raisin in the Sun by Daniel Petrie

The central performance is, of course, Sidney Poitier, who dominates the screen as he always does, but this is a film full of strong performances. Obviously a stage play brought to screen, I think it largely works in its favor (most of these films were stage plays originally, actually, but this might be the most 'staged'). It will take you to somber places, but I would certainly call it life-affirming.

I'm the odd one out. I like most of the Ozu films I've seen, but this one somehow didn't really grab me, and was one of the few discs I sold off. I love the sly sense of humor that Ozu displays in his observational dramas, but an outright comic film seems off for him.

Apart from the sex-with-food scenes between the gangster and his moll which to me bely the otherwise family-friendly vibe of the film, I didn't find this movie self-indulgent at all. It's a wonderful celebration of the emotional impact of food in our lives. Yes, vegans are at a disadvantage here, but apart from the turtle scene (and if seeing oysters being shucked from their shells disturbs you) there's not much animal slaughter. I mean, it's not one of those Italian-made Cannibal movies.
