All this talk about commentaries is overshadowing something far more insidious. Guess we're just going to ignore the fact that Criterion are releasing the sequel, without putting out Single Indemnity first. I hate when companies do that.

You joke, but Amazon Prime here in Australia has the first two Apu movies but not the third, which is not available on any Australian streaming service.

Stan has the first two Before movies but not the third, which is not available on any Australian streaming service.

Gets on my bloody nerves.

your counter point to TheArgentinian's question/critique was "NEW commentary ≠ Good commentary." (insert The Big Lebowski meme here)

two different posters took the op's words and tried to make him/her look foolish by implying that TheArgentinian did not know that Billy Wilder or other people who worked on some of these films are dead. another said, "stop embarrassing yourself."

but it's TheArgentinian who is gaslighting? hmm...

They may be holding tight for the inevitable reboot, simply titled... "Indemnity".

At least Miller's Crossing has new extras I guess. Can anyone refer me to the directors cut changes? Only really saw one line of dialogue being discussed in the main thread over the last several pages.

The cuts appear to be very short moments, adding up to about 2 minutes. They're being discussed as they're discovered in the MC thread.

My least favorite kind of commentary -- "This was so hard" or "This was such a big challenge" or "We had so many problems" followed by "but we totally mastered it!"

I think I'd rather listen to a contemporary paleontologist comment on Creature from the Black Lagoon than the self-congratulation in the commentary of so many "creatives" on new releases.

Pier Paolo Pasolini would’ve been 100 on March 5. Maybe an announcement of a boxset?

I would listen to a lot more commentaries if I could do so like a podcast while taking a walk (I know it's physically possible to do that, I'm just not set up to do it).

Now pardon the incoming rant:

There are a lot of companies like Kino and Eureka who have taken commentaries on as their primary extras, at least for certain releases, presumably because they're easy to produce. This is not an inherently good thing unless you have plenty of time to waste hearing mostly unengaging information you'll quickly forget spread out over the length of the film you most likely just watched.

As was said, new commentaries don't mean good commentaries. I've listened to commentaries that are just somebody telling me what other movies the latest actor to enter the frame has done for 90 minutes. This was a waste of my life and it would have been better had it not existed.

Generally, full-length commentaries are unnecessary unless you really want to watch the movie with commentary. I'm not sure how common this is, but I know for me, if I'm listening to a commentary, I'm not engaging much with the film itself, so I really don't need all the small talk and dead air it takes to spread a half-hour's worth of conversation over the length of a two-hour film.

Obviously not all commentaries are like that, but they seem to be becoming increasingly common among labels like I mentioned who use commentaries as their primary (often only) supplemental feature. I'd personally take a selected-scene commentary or a 20-minute interview/conversation over the majority of these commentaries. I don't need releases to include commentaries just for the sake of doing so if they're going to be of this standard.

I was just thinking about this yesterday, that it feels time is due for a box set to be announced. There haven't been any for this year thus far, with the last one being in November for the Once Upon of Time in China set. Aside from the Wong Kar-Wai set, there hasn't been a really major box set in a while it feels like to me. Of course you had Van Peebles, Marlon Riggs, the Olympic films, and a small Buñuel trio, but it's not exactly on the level of their Fellini and Varda sets. It just feels like it's time for them to give us something big to look forward to. The last special release announcement was for going 4K, which of course was significant, but it's not quite the same thing.
