Definition of artfilm is pretty loose. Back in the day a lot of so called art films that were shown in the US were blockbusters in their own regions.

I agree Criterion does do a ton of artsy films, and those are generally the ones I'm not a fan of (titles like Last Year in Marienbad, or countless other practically unknown films, that some would consider gems), but they also cover the biggest directors of their respective countries who are really anything but "artsy", many of which were tremendously influenced by American cinema.

Directors like Kurosawa, Melville, Clouzot, Fellini, Antonioni, Mizoguchi. Then of course they have actual directors who were either American/British or just worked there like Kubrick, Hitchcock, Ford, Lubitsch, Wilder, and many more, all of which created big popular films in their time.

I can see how those unfamiliar with Criterion's vast library might just mislabel them as an art film label, but that's not what most of their more popular releases are. In my view Criterion's most important role has been in preserving old classics. After that yes they also do art films.

Happy 30th Anniversary to this masterpiece! Here's to hoping that Criterion are able to get the rights back and releasing it on 4K/BD.

They may or may not have the rights already. Either way, this film does need a proper edition.

No, the IMDb message boards were closed down because they were riddled with racism, sexism, and homophobia. Not because of a difference of opinion.

And which Abel Ferrara film? Because most of his films would not be considered "art house," but rather "exploitation."

I always found it ironic when the posters would step into, say, a "The Tree of Life" board, and not only call the film itself senseless and boring and pretentious, but would attack its admirers by saying that there was no way that ANYONE could possibly like or be entertained by this pretentious film, or make any sense of it. No, the admirers of the film were simply acting pretentious, and pretending to like the film and understand it, to appear smarter than the average Joe. So, because these posters didn't like it or understand it, it must therefore be impossible for ANYONE to. The irony of a person with that mindset using the term 'pretentious'.... And, those same posters would call anyone a moron that didn't think "The Dark Knight" was the greatest movie of all time in those days.

I just had a personal attack in a FB movie group thread a few days ago, where I recommended some Abel Ferrara film to someone, and two completely other guys came and started telling me how 'sh***y' my taste was. Ugh, LOL. I'm just likely extra sensitive to it, right now, pfft....

Again, I'm not attacking the posters in this thread.
I never joined the IMDb boards so I wouldn't know what they were like or what they became. I did join the IMDB v2.1 boards, though, some time after the shutdown.

The Tree of Life's not my cup of tea but if it's the kind of thing that works for you, more power to you.

No, they were closed down because of people personally attacking each other, in general. Constant reporting and flagging, constant personal attacks. Fearsome political discussions. Even threats. Not JUST political correctness, or lack thereof.

Again, I'm not talking about 'difference of opinion', and you know that very well. I and others were talking about the belittling of PEOPLE for liking certain things. You're just trying to be unpleasant with your eye roll nonsense.

And the Ferrara film was "Siberia", which most certainly would be considered art house and not exploitation.

With all the fun posts of foreign film directors doing super-hero movies, let's not forget that Akira Kurosawa wanted to produce or direct one of this characters films:

Haha. Here we go again...

Well, despite my personal experience with the IMDb message boards, the founder Col Needham echoed as much. And these various news sites reported on it:

https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-e...-a7562701.html
https://techcrunch.com/2017/02/03/on...shutting-down/
https://www.polygon.com/2017/2/3/145...-shutting-down

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but are racist, sexist, and homophobic comments not personal attacks? Political correctness? Jesus, you guys tell on yourselves.

I like how I'm always the one being accused of "confrontational" or "unpleasant" behaviour when I'm literally always the one being attacked. And often times by the entire thread, for something as simple as wanting a slip cover.

And I haven't seen Siberia, but if it's anything like Ferrara and Dafoe's other collaborations Pasolini and Tommaso. Then yes, it could be considered art house. But that's why I asked. Take a chill pill and get out of your feelings. There are wars being fought and people dying.

Now, everyone get ready for Criterion's announcement tomorrow.

Edit: Sorry, but one more thing. The above-mentioned issues were, and are still, so bad that IMDb ratings for movies about gender and feminism, race and homosexuality are often downvoted before they are even released. So, please, give me a break!

Not really love but a really strong, slightly disturbing, lust. Hear that Star Trek: the Motion Picture? Jason and the Argonauts? M. Hulot's Holiday? I LUST you.

I’m more of a film and cinema person myself. Tiktok and Instagram stories are too pretentious for my taste.

You guys seem to sort of arguing the same point vis-a-vis IMDB message boards. They were shut down because the discussions on certain films, particularly high profile films, were becoming extremely toxic. And, yes, this often included racist, sexist and homophobic comments. It became extremely embarrassing for Amazon as well as the studios for whom IMDB is a major promotional tool.

Sadly, shutting them down resulted in a huge amount of collateral damage to the largely respectful discussions that went on elsewhere on those forums.
