I have so many un-opened Blu-rays, DVDs, UHDs, CDs that if any are scratched I'm pretty much screwed. I might have to do what I've never done before and start opening UHDs and Criterions right when I get them. Even if I don't plan to watch'em anytime soon. I've only ever done that with vinyl

Me too. I buy them faster than I can watch them.

As soon as I get discs, I open them, and back them up. Then a) if there's an issue with the disc I discover it immediately and b) if something goes wrong with it down the line I still have a copy.

Although I've stopped doing that the past month or so because I'm out of drive space. Working on it...

Usually I only open them right away if the disc is loose. If it sounds like parts of the case are broken off too then I just return it unopened. Otherwise I inspect it first.

With all these reports of scratched blu-rays, I can't help but wonder if a UHD/Blu-ray combo for Monty Python and the Holy Grail is imminent?

Well, it was a laserdisc title, so it wouldn't surprise me.
That, and having one of my fav films in the Criterion Collection would be cool.

Yeah, based on the size of your collection, my quick calculations tell me that you’re looking at 60-80 terabytes to rip all your blu rays, and that’s before redundancy. I’ve thought about doing that but the cost scared me off. I’m just crossing my fingers.

Just shy of 70TB at the moment, but that includes a lot of stuff not in my collection on here (wrestling, some TV shows on DVD that weren't in the database, NBA/NFL/etc...)

15th falls on a Friday this month. Hope we get the announcement on Friday and not the following Monday. Also hoping for a Claire Denis title in celebration of her new film's release in theaters this week

(Both Sides of the Blade).

Or Demonlover finally getting announced, that'd be cool.

I've also been thinking about selling my Lost Highway Kino bluray incase of a 4K UHD release by Criterion. Is that pretty much a safe, near-100% bet at this point?

Janus is showing the Lost Highway restoration, it’s release is certain. When can be up for debate. Announced this month for an October release would make sense.

So discussions pertaining to ripping and back-ups are allowed on here? I was once warned a few years back that such topics are forbidden on here, and that I'd be banned from the forum if I brought it up a second time.

As long as you're not discussing methods of doing so, you should be fine. Simply mentioning that you back your discs up isn't really an issue, it's teaching people how to circumvent copy protection that causes trouble.
