All of the Ishiro Honda films that were newly added to the Criterion Channel this morning have the Criterion and Janus logos at the start of them.

I wonder if they would use similar packaging to their Showa Godzilla set or something different.
Honestly if they went for something different it would be a good time to reissue the Godzilla set in new packaging. That book-set is probably going to be expensive to keep repressing, and it's not like they're fixing the issues it has by repressing it in the same packaging.
And count me in as someone who'd repurchase the set.

Excellent news. Hope a boxset comes out in 2023.

Also saw that Michael Mann's The Keep is now on the Criterion Channel. Doubt that's in HD though?

This doesn't surprise me at all—the "old laptop" is their only optical drive, and when they replace the laptop the new device will not have an optical drive.

I would have agreed with you if you'd ask me before the major studios started putting their CGI departments in impossible crunches that match the worst of non-union video game developer exploitation. Now I watch blockbusters on my phone and pretend the CGI looks like absolute garbage because of the streaming fidelity rather than because whoever holds the purse strings is cutting corners.

You are correct. It is the same ancient master because Michael Mann continues to block new masters.

There’s lately been rumblings of a possible Wings or Desire 4K UHD release in the UK via AE. If Criterion doesn’t updgrade it to a 4K release stateside by January then something somewhere is f**ked.

It seems like the list of prospective Japanese box sets is stacking up!

Ishiro Honda
Kinuyo Tanaka
Akira Kurosawa

I'm probably missing some others. An Ozu box hasn't been rumored but I know a lot of us here would certainly welcome it to say the least.

Kobayashi seems possible. Probably not everything like his later television work, but most of the rest.

That's my bet. Amazon's Prime Day begins the 11th so Criterion may pick the 18th.

Also potentially Mizoguchi I think as the last individual release was over 4 years ago.

I would be annoyed if they leave out his TV work. I figured an Eclipse Set or a director specific boxset would be the only way I would get those.

The TV work operates under different licenses, and from I understand of Japanese television, the rights are always a mess. Something like they have to get signoff from literally everyone involved (I read it on the Internet, so it must be true).

Most of his film work was through Shochiku, the company he apprenticed at after his time in the war, but he's also got Toho (everything from Kwaidan on) and then his television work.

The thing is that they obviously have enough based on the Eclipse sets and previous Blu-ray releases to make it feasible without new deals (assuming Toho would allow the corelease of works with another studio). If they skipped his television work and just got me Hymn to a Tired Man, Beautiful Days, and Three Loves in some kind of set with The Human Condition, Kwaidan, Harakiri, and Samurai Rebellion, I'd be happy.

I managed to find copies of various quality of most of his later work except Growing Autumn. I read Stephen Prince's book about Kobayashi and he makes it out like I didn't miss much, though.
