I think you comprised a good list of films where he has a substantial role. There are a few other ones like Fort Graveyard, Japans Longest Day, Shinsengumi, Samurai Banners that are fantastic. I think the best film he's in is probably Seven Samurai, and my favorite performance of his is from either Throne of Blood or Yojimbo.

He's great in smaller roles in the Don of Japan films, and the Battle of Port Arthur. He's also really good in the TV show Shogun as well. Looking at IMDB he has about 186 credits, and I've probably seen 1/3. He's done a lot and the more of his films that are made available, the better.

For me, it's actually Ánimas Trujano (The Important Man) (1961), where Mifune actually plays an indigenous Mexican.



When I first came across that info years back I thought it was a joke, or that maybe it was a silly comedy kind of movie, but it's actually a very well received film, and performance from Mifune. It was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards and Golden Globes in 1962. Mexico also embraced Mifune, and he was apparently great with the press and everything. It apparently got a new remaster in 2020, and now I see ripped version Youtube with English captions, so I'll actually get to finally see it one day it seems, though ideally i'd love to see a Blu-ray of it from Criterion, or any other label.

I called my closest Barnes & Noble. They don't have the November sale explicitly written on their calendar yet, but they have an unspecified movie promo beginning Nov. 4.

Today in pretentious merch news, Criterion has announced new Criterion Channel Genre tees. For just $35 ****ing dollars you can have a shirt that simply says Foreign, or Gangster, or Monster or Screwball on the front of it. It does have the Channel logo on the back, but c'mon, who's buying this crap? I guess they're tapping that overpriced Supreme demographic.
