Did I miss the Criterion website's 24-hour 50% off flash sale? Isn't it usually held bi-annually in late February and late October?

Yes, unfortunately you missed it. Was October 11th this year. But as noted a few posts earlier, the B&N 50% off sale starts on Friday.

Who said I was unaware? No celebrity getting free stuff ever influences what I buy, and Criterion isn't an exception.

No wonder I missed it! They held their flash sale earlier than usual in October this year. I thought I was subscribed to their email notifications but apparently not!

I like earning loyalty points through Criterion but B&N's sale will have to do.

And they're comparable how? Like, who would actually compare a criterion closet video, to a celebrity eating increasingly hot wings and trying answering questions? Maybe just stop while you're behind.

Maybe a week earlier than expected, but it's mostly been in the teens in recent years:

October 20th, 2020
October 15th, 2019

It's really bizarre how my memory fixated on the end of October as when the flash sale occurred. Maybe the February sales are at the end of that month and I conflated the two? Either way, I'll be sure to remember that mid-October is flash sale time on Criterion.com starting next year.

Half the Feb sales have been 4th Tues though a couple times around Valentines (2012,2018) and a few times lately in early March (2015, 2019, 2022).

The Oct sales had settled into 3rd Tuesday for years and this years moved to 2nd Tues.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger on the emails; I've been subscribed (and re-subscribed) for years and have NEVER gotten an email from them.

I thought it was a great film (I think Kodi Smit McPhee was the best of all the actors, he was just so sad and creepy and adorable at the same time). Kind of surprised Criterion released it since I don't think it's some huge ahcievement overall and doesn't have much replay ability though. Then again I know they have The Piano in their collection (in 4K!) so it makes sense I guess in keeping with the Jane Campion theme.

As far as Netflix releases go though, I'm glad for others that this got a 4K + Blu-ray announcement same day.

Like I'm thankful Criterion is doing 4K UHD, but it's kinda silly to not release a 4K + Blu-ray at the same time, especially for something exclusive (like Roma, The Irishman, and likely Mank and Bardo if they get the rights to release them) or something that is being touted as coming from a new 4K restoration (like almost everything else they have been releasing lately).

It must suck to have 3 formats to cater to, but at least you know Blu-ray collectors are more likely to upgrade to 4K in the future and likely wouldn't mind a "useless" 4K disc until its time, or likewise a 4K collector wouldn't mind a Blu-ray, especially if it has features that aren't on the 4K (although 4K features would be ideal, especially deleted scenes).

I received a second copy of Lost Highway and it’s got the same raked scratches. Scream definitely have their issues, but most of the older discs (mid 2010s) of theirs look fine.

I don't really have the time nor inclination to sit here and give you a basic lesson on how marketing works but it's proven that celebrity endorsements can and do drive interest in products and generate sales, despite your personal indignant declaration to the contrary.

And those videos have nothing to do with QC issues which are an industry wide problem affecting all of the labels both major studios and boutiques alike.

Barnes & Noble

It will be Friday in Japan in about 2 hours. Does this mean Barnes and Noble will offer Criterion's Japanese Blu-rays for HALF OFF?

Any chance of Criterion releasing the movie Diane (2018) starring May Kay Place? I saw this with a cast Q&A at a theatre upon release and right away thought "this should be a Criterion release." No word of a Blu-ray or DVD release at all.

Does Criterion ever peruse these forums looking for suggestions and ideas?
