I heard about that as well. I think maybe it fell through due to some issue with the music rights?

Great film indeed. It grows on me more and more every time I watch it.

Sad about no Kurosawa, but day 1 for Romeo and Juliet.

Maybe Paramount wants to do their own 4K.

Nice to see someone else appreciates the flick mate.

Richard Linklater confirmed that Criterion were working on it around 2008 I think it was. They even supposedly had the cover art done and then nothing else was said until this;

https://www.ign.com/articles/2007/03...aters-next-dvd

Unfortunately for us, Warner definitely didn't follow through with their promise to Linklater.

I'm a little confused by the verbiage on the site. It makes it look like if you got the blu-ray only set, you're getting "high-definition restorations with 2.0 DTS-HDMA" which suggests it is the same blu-ray set they previously released. So no remastered blu-ray from the 4k restorations?

Yeah, there's no new BD-only release coming out. The only way to get the new restoration on Blu-ray is to get the new dual-format release.

In a well rounded month with 2 excellent UHD picks, the release that got my attention first is the Duras set. Haven't seen the movies but very interested.

There' a very decent 720 of India Song which you can grab with English subs off youtube to try before you buy. I'll definitely be getting the Duras set as well as Romeo and Juliet and the Three Colors upgrade. A great month.

It's sort of true though. Part of what was annoying about the NYT article was the implication that there were all of these fantastic films by black directors that were gathering dust somewhere while Criterion racist-ly looked the other way. The problem is more that there just aren't that many films by black directors in general... hence all the re-releases.

I also thought it was crappy for the NYT to shame Criterion but not draw positive attention to Kino for being better at the "diversity and inclusion" thing, even before it was cool. But that's how it works, I suppose.

Anyways, fingers crossed for a 4k Meteor Man from Criterion soon. The superior Townsend.

So at this point the key is to get a less scratched disc at best from this company. I thought they were considered a classy label..
It's def bad, I'm tired of making these types of posts...I purchased a good 10 so far during this B&N sale, and half have defects...The ones I've played seem to be ok, just annoying to see this. Heck, even my Moonage Daydream disc was scratched, so it's def the mexican plant.

Except, the vast majority of films from Black Filmmaker's that Criterion has released are not re-releases, and in every instance where it was a re-release, it's an actual upgrade over any previous release.

So after the NYT article, here are the films or releases from Black directors (re-releases are bolded):
  • Soleil Ô
  • Mandabi
  • The Signifyin' Works of Marlon Riggs (7 films)
  • Pariah
  • Deep Cover
  • Love and Basketball
  • Melvin Van Peebles Set (5 films) (including Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song)
  • Menace II Society 4K
  • One Night in Miami
  • The Learning Tree
  • Time
  • Love Jones
  • Eyimofe
  • Farewell Amor
  • Shaft 4K
  • Devil in a Blue Dress 4K
  • Buck and Preacher
  • Faya Dayi
  • Muna Moto
  • Eve's Bayou
  • Malcom X 4K
  • Cooley High
  • This Is Not a Burial, It's a Resurrection
  • Hollywood Shuffle

So of the 34 films listed there, 25 of them are brand new to Blu-ray in the US (if not the world). Of the 9 re-releases, 4 of them have been upgraded to 4K. The other 5 that are BD-only are also improvements over previous releases, featuring newer restorations, and/or a wealth of new supplements.. Even if you remove some of the Marlon Riggs films due to their length, it's still clear that this argument of them doing mostly re-releases of black films is not one based in reality.

Dazed and Confused is one of my favorite films and it sure is great to see this getting a 4K Criterion release. It's sure to be the definitive version for years to come. The 3 Colors Trilogy upgrade is quite nice as well. I'd like to watch Hollywood Shuffle sometime in the near future too. Overall, I give the February announcements a solid B.

Same here. I know nothing about the director or the two films, but the announcement tweet included an image of Delphine Seyrig and Michel Lonsdale in a scene from one of the titles, and that was enough to pique my interest.

Also in for Romeo and Juliet. Actually never seen it, and on reading more after the announcement was fascinated to learn that Paul McCartney has claimed on multiple occasions that he was approached by Zeffirelli for the male lead.

I personally don't care all that much what Criterion releases as long as they start releasing more of their Japanese titles that are being held hostage, and there are hundreds of them. They could release a monthly release of a series of films about making sandwiches and I wouldn't complain if they released more of their Japanese films. That's all I really want to see from them, and a few others. Pat Garrett, After Hours, Le Deuxième Souffle, ok, I lied there are plenty of titles that they have that I want outside of their Japanese backlog.

My monthly Criterion rant has been checked off.

I saw cinema presentations of the new 4K remasterings of the 'Three Colors'. There is a noticeable yellow tint to certain scenes and I would say the 'Red' is far darker than I remember it being. The yellow tinting didn't really bother me and I generally found the films gained more from the recent remastering than they lost. The third one did take some getting used to. But I will definitely buy this release.

And I'm in for 'Dazed & Confused'. I haven't owned that one since VHS, so I'm due to revisit it.

So Duras finally got into the collection.

Undoubtedly my favorite announcement in a long time. Huge fan of Duras and considering how these films were unreasonably difficult to find, this should open US film lovers to one of the great forgotten directors.

With Duras, I would, however, advise readers to watch her films any way possible instead of blind-buying (Both films should be on the Criterion Channel). Her films are a mixture between Tarkovsky's long, gazing visuals and Antonioni's atmospheric use of alienation. Viewers will either appreciate her style or completely dislike it. Nonetheless, a very welcome addition to the collection for me!

I just wish politics wouldn't be a factor in determining what a company like Criterion releases.

Remember the 1980s or pre-21st century, Criterion, and keep releasing classic, rare, and foreign films like you always do.

Avoid politics at all costs. Cinema is cinema.

Remember the Jason Polan line drawings, Criterion?

Let's get back to the art.

The NY Times have gotta stop their social commentary on companies like Criterion.

The focus should just be what matters: Movies.
