Ugh. I hate people. Reminds me of the time I went to see that movie about the Hindenburg and some guy starts yelling at another guy for playing with his laser pointer in the theater. That's why I just watch movies at home now.

Good Lord...

I had somehow missed the news that Janus had acquired Jean Eustache's entire catalog of films! They announced it half a year ago, but that slipped by me.

Hopefully, a Criterion box of those may be forthcoming someday.

I am so happy to see Criterion's return to focusing more on boxed sets. I'm a box set fan.

There were so few from them for the past couple of years. After a boom of them a couple of years ago.

Now, we have Mai Zetterling, Michael Haneke, Lars von Trier, and the 4K of Three Colors all within a couple of months.

I'm now hoping we can get some Pasolini and Eustache boxes down the line.

And, of course, we're all still hoping for that ONE big box set....

Does anyone believe that the following titles should be part of the Criterion Collection? Let me know.
1) Withnail And I (was released on DVD by Criterion in the early 2000s, on Blu-ray in US by Image Entertainment and on a 2K restored Blu-ray in UK by Arrow. Maybe Criterion could release Arrow's Blu-ray in US too.)
2) The Last Wave (also was released on DVD by Criterion in the early 2000s, and on Blu-ray in Australia by Umbrella Entertainment with 4K restoration. Hopefully Criterion will release Umbrella Entertainment's Blu-ray in US too.)
3) Amadeus (available on Blu-ray by Warner Bros, maybe Criterion could restore it in 4K and to include both Theatrical and Director's Cut versions.)
4) The Nightmare Before Christmas (to make its 4K UHD debut if Criterion partners with Disney)
5) Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 (to make their 4K UHD debut)
6) Aladdin (the original 1992) (if and already available on 4K UHD by Disney, Criterion can release it on 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio and new interviews including all the previous extras by Disney)

I just picked up BUCK AND THE PREACHER. I've been interested in this ever since I saw NOPE at the Alamo, where they had a preshow interview with film historian Mia Mask (I believe), who is on this disc, about black westerns and their history.

I'll try to go back to B&N this weekend before the sale ends for a few more titles.

I have that, too, but haven't watched it, yet (along with hundreds of others, LOL).

It's one of the few Poitier films I've never seen, but have always been curious about. I'll get around to it.

This week, I'm digging into The Criterion edition of Spike Lee's "Malcolm X", a film I have seen a number of times (including opening night in the theater), but haven't seen in around a decade, so I'm going all in and it and its features starting Tuesday. It was my Best Picture choice for 1992.

Hi all, I've been putting some serious thought into selling off my Criterion Blu-Ray collection. Currently, I am trying to gauge the values of my collection, mainly searching Ebay for the recently sold and for sale Blu-Ray copies of my films, primarily as "like new" condition. Virtually all of my collection is like new, with many never used. In total, it's 140 pieces (some multi-film collections). Using a very conservative estimate, the value seems to be ~$3,500. This includes a number of high value/out of print titles, such as The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Third Man, Last Year at Marienbad, Chungking Express, Days of Heaven, Harold and Maude, Rosemary's Baby, etc.

What would you say is the ideal way of unloading these? I've considered Ebay, either item by item (might be too time consuming), breaking into several lots, or one huge lot. Obviously, I'd be willing to take quite a bit less in lots.

They can be seen here, part of page 1 through part of page 5.

Sorry, but you won't make ~$3,500 selling them on eBay. That's for sure. Especially if, "Like New." As one member once said, "selling Blu-rays on eBay is like pulling teeth." And that's not even factoring in eBay fees, shipping charges, and possible returns. I've sold many Criterions on eBay in the past, always brand-new. And I was lucky if I sold them for $19.99 each. You will probably get more for the OOP titles. But keep in mind, just because an item is listed for $200, doesn't mean it sells. Trading on here might be a better option, but I have no experience with that. Either way, good luck to you!

Oh the joy of dealing with people who want $22 plus shipping for a used title.... I would suggest having realistic earthling expectations when pricing over there.

Then they won't sell. On the other hand, it appears to me that after eBay's vig and shipping/packaging costs you'd be lucky to net > $0 selling used discs over there, and I don't know of any B&Ms anywhere near me still buying used media, and I never got much more than a buck or two when they were. It's a buyer's market these days. I basically assume at this point that the value of the discs I want to sell is essentially zero, even though they're all in excellent condition.

If this is what you're getting selling Criterions in like new condition on eBay, particularly OOP ones, you're doing it wrong.

You're going to get nothing trying to sell something like Anchorman 2 but an experienced and competent seller with a good reputation can easily make their money back or even make a profit on any boutique label title, but you do have to put a bit of effort into it by taking good photos and giving good descriptions.

This really isn't true, at least when it comes to boutique stuff.

I've sold loads of Criterion on eBay (usually for upgrades), and almost all sell for $18.95-$22.95, depending on the title. It might take a few weeks sometimes, but as long as you list them for a fair price (IE cheapest listing or close), they always sell. After eBay fees, shipping, and bubble envelopes, that'll net you about $12.00-$16.00. It's not great, but it's certainly not nothing. Same thing for Vinegar Syndrome titles, Severin, Kino, and others.

On the other hand, a random, non-boutique, mass-produced, non-OOP bluray from like 2014 is a different story obviously.

Pretty much that. Australia being a smaller market does mean things sometimes sit, but the costs and hassle to import mean the market probably leans a bit more heavily on eBay and the like, especially if you're just after one title. I've had zero problem selling for enough to be reasonably profitable if you exclude the initial purchase price, and the few times I've sold OOP boutique discs I've generally gone close to turning a profit on the whole thing.

Expecting to sell Criterions for more than $20 in the US, though, seems a bit silly.

Don't non-OOP Criterions depreciate in value over time?

I feel like the only physical media that appreciates in value are rare Vinyl records. To me that is a solid investment compared to blu-ray discs.

you can't compare rare vinyl to normal in print blu rays.... and even those aren't always valuable. I have plenty of records that are super rare but no one even knows they exist, so they're basically worthless dollar wise.
