However, the Criterion does have the Eureka beat with colors. The Eureka one looks a lot more sickly. |

Mildred Pierce definitely places itself in the top 5 films I discovered this year, ranking 4th behind Aimless Bullet (3rd), Night and Fog in Japan (2nd), and Twenty Four Eyes (1st). I consider this to be an excellent film to the highest degree, a brutal critique on the American Dream seen through the tragedy of Joan Crawford's performance. Crawford bounces back into fame and the magnitude her voice has in this film is tremendous. Not only does Crawford's performance carries the weight, but also the supporting cast as well, placing their legacy into this classic. Mildred Pierce, to me, is The Great Gatsby of American films (Much better than the Gatsby adaptations). With that said, I haven't bought myself a copy of this film yet but am glad I held off on the Blu-ray, although admittedly it never was in my wishlist in the first place (Forgot to add this to my B&N sale list last month).
Last Hurrah for Chivalry is a film I'm somewhat conflicted about. It is a great wuxia film, incorporating some of the staged yet brilliant elements of a Shaw Brothers production. Like most of Woo's greatest works, it is an action flick with a statement of honor against all odds. Yet, wuxia is not what Woo is best known for, and this film isn't one I clearly remember a scene from. I will have to watch this on the Criterion Channel once again before locking in my purchase with this, but glad to see that Woo has finally returned to the collection once again. Inland Empire will most likely be the most sold-out title for this month, although I have yet to see this film. One particular reason is the jumpscares, which I am not a huge fan of (Let alone, a huge fan of horror films). Will have to watch this one with caution, but I need to add the rest of Lynch's works into my cart the next time I buy from Criterion as well. Also haven't seen Chilly Scenes of Winter but the opening line of the description on Criterion's site caught my attention: "The trailblazing Joan Micklin Silver—one of only five women to direct a film for a Hollywood studio in the 1970s." Curious to know, who are the other 4 directors and what film(s) did they release? |

WANDA (1970) directed by and starring Barbara Loden is another. I think Criterion has released it. Ditto GIRLFRIENDS (1978), directed by Claudia Weill. Okay, that's four women directors, so far. Who's the fifth? Well, maybe WANDA wasn't released by a major Hollywood studio. Does New World Pictures count as a Hollywood studio? Barbara Peeters directed BURY ME AN ANGEL (1971) for them. The Criterion release contains only the longer 3hr cut. The region free UK release from Second Sight contains both cuts of the film (but extras are on a PAL DVD). ![]() |

There's that famous scene near the end with Dern that's truly terrifying and chill-inducing, and what makes it so effective and thrilling is how slowly it creeps up on you. You know it's coming, yet the terror just keeps on amplifying and you can't help but get sucked in. |
