Please note that our replacement packaging program is currently on pause during our busiest season. The program should resume sometime in the spring of 2023. I have added you to our internal list, and we will alert you as soon as the program is up and running once again.

When the program is live, replacement packaging for most in-print titles is $5/piece ($5 for a case, $5 for each piece of litho art, $5 per booklet, etc), including shipping within us and canada. International shipping, including shipments to canada, will be based on the size and weight of your order and will start at $10. We do not have any packaging available for out of print titles.

Patiently waiting for my copy of the Europe Trilogy to ship from Diabolik. Still kinda bummed it's not a 4K set but still thrilled about the bump from DVD to BD. It was a long time coming.

It's still baffling to me that this actually happened, that it didn't end as a bad idea quickly shot down, that it actually made it all the way to store shelves. Baffling.

In other news, Imitation Of Life arrives a day early! It's a much nicer package in person than I expected. The booklet is especially pleasing.

I know what you mean. It’s as if they design these packaging ideas and put them into production without having anyone sit down and actually open and close them repeatedly. I think Citizen Kane is their version of the Hellraiser box. Once opened you can’t put it back together. I finally gave up and just tossed the booklet in a drawer.

I'd love to see Criterion do give a Blu-ray upgrade for The Spirit of the Beehive, probably my most wanted Blu-ray upgrade (of one of their prior DVD releases) from them.

Also, I remember seeing in various threads people complaining about Criterion "sitting on" all these Japanese films that they have on the channel that they have not released physically and I want to address this.

It's actually not as simple as "they're sitting on these movies." The truth is, streaming rights and physical home media rights for movies are actually completely different things. So I presume Criterion has the American streaming rights to a lot of these movies, but doesn't have the home media rights to them.

And I myself want to see several of these movies they have on the channel released physically, like Humanity and Paper Balloons (1937) and several Mikio Naruse movies like Yearning (1964), Floating Clouds (1955), and Two in the Shadow/Scattered Clouds (1967). And I think it's a shame that NO Mikio Naruse has ever been released on Blu-ray in America and I'd love to see a Blu-ray of When a Woman Ascends the Stairs (1960) (at least the master of that movie on the channel is HD and stunning).

Around 2008-2009 when Jon Mulvaney would actually respond to me, I was asking about Hunter in the Dark and I asked him if they had any intention of releasing it or any other Hideo Gosha films on DVD. (I wasn't Blu-ray ready at that point) and if it was only meant for streaming. His response was that they hoped to release it and more Gosha films in the future and that all their Shochiku titles were acquired for streaming and DVD release. He also said that it can take time to get to certain titles. Now, 15 years later they have only released one Gosha title which is a shame.

I have no idea about Toho/Nikkatsu/etc, but I would assume they have at least the physical rights to the titles they released on DVD.

On another note, this is pretty cool.

You are correct in that they have the physical rights to the titles they've released on DVD. There are a lot of DVD only Japanese titles I'd love to see released on Blu-ray like Red Beard (1965)(which I know there is a restoration of), Twenty Four Eyes (1954), Early Summer (1951), Floating Weeds (1959) all look like they could use a restoration from what I've seen on the channel or otherwise look better. Though I also want Blu-ray's of When a Woman Ascends the Stairs (1960), The Bad Sleep Well (1960), Pitfall (1962) and The Face of Another (1966), at least the HD masters for them on the channel look great.

But even if they have the physical rights to them, it's all contingent on the Japanese studios and what they will and won't allow to be released and that's beyond Criterion's control. A 4K restoration of Early Summer was released on Blu-ray in Japan several years ago, yet we've never seen it released on Blu-ray anywhere in the west.

I'd love to see a restoration of Keisuke Kinoshita's Twenty Four Eyes (1954) an incredible period drama about a teacher and her students that is among the most acclaimed live action Japanese films in Japan, making Kinema Junpo's top ten Japanese films of all time. But I don't think it even has a Blu-ray release over there!

In regards to the Toho titles, they probably don't have the physical rights to the streaming only films. All the Mikio Naruse movies I mentioned, plus Humanity and Paper Balloons, are Toho titles.

In regards to the Shochiku titles, I have no idea what the situation is with them. Several of them first appeared on streaming on Hulu back over a decade ago in 2011-13. They might have only acquired the streaming rights for them. And I'd love to see another Kinoshita film from Shochiku, She Was Like a Wild Chrysanthemum (1955) that can be streamed on the channel, come to Blu-ray, especially because it has never been released on disc in America.

There's a user on Letterboxd named Michael Hutchins who knows more about this stuff than I do and if you want, you should reach out to him about it.

FYI corrected replacement discs now available.

We are now offering replacement Blu-ray discs for PIERROT LE FOU copies that were purchased after our 2020 release. The replacement discs have the reinstated green scene and can be distinguished from the earlier ones with the "Second Pressing" printed on the disc. No replacement DVDs are available, only Blu-ray. The packaging for the release is also not being replaced; only the disc.

In order to receive yours, please get back to us with your shipping address and a photo of your name and the date written on the front / art side of your current disc in sharpie, paint marker, or white out.

Once we have this, your new disc will ship to you in the coming 1-2 weeks (if not sooner). You'll receive tracking from our Pitney Bowes shipping system as soon as it's on the way.
