Yeah, I plan on getting it, simply to replace the horrible Tartan release. Still would prefer a US release and a Criterion one would be very exciting.

I am surprised you aren't a subscriber to the Criterion Channel. There are a lot of Japanese films on there that haven't gotten a physical media release yet.

I've seen almost all of them already. When Criterion was on Hulu I had a month trial and watched everything they had that I hadn't already seen. They haven't added much since that's new to me.

I mean you can access the site & forums without an account.

I was browsing around here for about 6 months before I made an account.

The counterpoint is that many of the titles Criterion are releasing can already be streamed on Criterion Channel, or are a reissue of something another label like Twilight Time released.

Also I’m doubtful to how streaming 4K compares to physical 4K.

As a note from the creator of that thread. All of the films in the “very light” section are mostly there for completion, a lot of the films in that section are the best they have ever looked due to previous releases either being telecined or using even more dnr/EE.

The releases in the very light section have more detail than other releases but just have a bit of dnr. Also I never said they look “wrong”, they just could look better. Stuff like M does look beautiful but also has a SLIGHT bit of dnr as confirmed by criterion.

You’re exactly right. What is exactly the point and benefit of a Criterion release of something that can already be streamed or bought in 4k. They seem to be neglecting the preservation aspect of films are not readily available.

Even more of a reason why it’s a pointless endeavor that could be better spent on other releases.

Imagine arguing at a site named Blu-ray.com that a physical media release is pointless because it's available to stream

Especially after the HBO Max debacle.
"It's available to stream!"
Will it be available to stream ten, five, hell, even one year from now?

I don't trust any streaming service any longer.

I'd rather spend $15-20 on a blu-ray than worry if a film I love will still be available to stream in the future.

Streaming is ok. However, if it's a film or program you really enjoy, make sure to own a physical copy. The streaming companies can add or remove programming whenever they wish.

Streaming is the thing you use to watch films you're unfamiliar with to see if they're worth owning.

Exactly, it's the equivalent of renting in the 80s and 90s

For me streaming is what it is replacing: normal television viewing. If I don’t want to completely commit to something, or if it’s late or I’m tired, I might start up a steaming pile of streaming. Otherwise, for serious viewing I pop in a disc. Streaming is fast food viewing just like television always has been.

Bingo! Streaming is perfect in that regard. And relatively inexpensive.

I have several streaming services (Hulu & Live TV - $85 a month, Apple TV+ - $7 a month, Netflix - $16 a month, HBO Max - $15 a month, and Amazon Prime - $9 a month), and it sure adds up!

the lack of latin american movies in the collection is pahetic. the NYT should write a profile on it...

Ok, how about the Criterion 4K or non-4K releases that already have 4K or non-4K blu-ray releases and use the same transfer, and have almost identical bonus features or is missing some? About as pointless of a release as you can get.

Or like War or the Worlds which got a Criterion blu-ray in 2020 but 2 years later gets a 4K release making the Criterion release worthless. Criterion releases are supposed to be above the rest, not behind or redundant.
