Last year's sale wasn't until March 8th ..It's often on the day of their biggest release of the month, so possibly Feb 21st with the Three Colors Trilogy, though the 28th would include Dazed and Confused as well. And if they push it to March 7th, then we also get Mildred Pierce 4K in the mix. I have no idea

I'm just trying to iron out my budgeting for the next couple of months.

If it's the 28th or 7th, I push the flash sale purchase to March and move the March stuff to February. Otherwise...I spend too much in one month and my wife looks at me disappointingly for about 10 seconds.

The horror...

I saw it somewhere on social media, maybe Dawn of the Discs? It will be 4K UHD for both films.

I have a $50 gift cert from my points earned in their last flash sale, plus a $10 gift cert I got from Criterion around Christmas. They usually send me a $10 cert before each flash sale as well so currently I have $60 in gift certs, but hoping it'll be $70.

I hope it's pushed to March 7 tbh so I can throw in the UHD of Mildred Pierce.

Does anybody know if Criterion has the US rights to La Terra Trema? It looks like there's a Japanese blu-ray, but no blu anywhere else.

i was actually thinking about them releasing the Larry Sanders Show would be amazing. I doubt it'll ever get a proper blu-ray release and it really deserves preservation.

My local Barnes & Noble condensed their Criterion down to two, four foot sections and that's it. And their Arrow table display was completely gone. I was really bummed when I saw this.

Never say never, but this will require a new 4K master to be prepared. Studio Canal had a 4K mastered BD some years back, but there were serious grading issues that are likely baked into their master, and would make for a very dissatisfying 4k experience. If you like the film (or are curious to see it), the Criterion release provides a strong organic presentation and a veritable film school's worth of revealing supplements. Don't cheat yourself out of it holding out for some future release (Bird in the hand and all that).

Same at mine. It seems like they haven’t gotten any recent titles after the Shaw Vol. 2 set either There was a black history month display where it used to be but I don’t think the change is temporary. It ain’t even February yet

A lot of Criterion stuff is on HBO MAX. Granted it's only 1080p streaming but maybe it is more cost effective than caving. I'd stream it and if you deem it a masterpiece then invest in the Blu-Ray and extra's of a disc.

Reminds me, I was just in a B&N store on Wednesday and their media area was pretty well torn apart… boxes everywhere, lots of stuff stacked every which way including loose, empty shelves. Definitely something big going on there. They hadn't got to the Criterion shelves yet, but a lot of Criterions in those piles and boxes. I probably won't be back there until July.

I wonder if the Criterions there get DD 5.1 soundtracks (at best) instead of the Channel's Dolby Surround…

I doubt it I just checked Chungking Express and it doesn't have the 5.1 track. Algiers and stuff like The Blob or Kurosawa is just old Mono anyway. Still ideal to test a library of content for at least a couple months.

If I had to ask for an old movie in 4K, I think it would be Lolita (1962), it deserves more appreciation, artistic appreciation. I hope Criterion hears me.

Is there overlap between the Criteria on HBO Max and what's on the Criterion Channel?

Been thinking about subbing to HMAX because it's got a ton of things on my watchlist, per Letterboxd, but I don't know how much of that is already on the Criterion Channel, which I already have.

I'm a day one criterion channel charter member. It's a permanent fixture there too

Is it possible that Criterion will release a 4k of Naked Lunch in the near future? That new Arrow UK release is tempting. I’d much prefer to get a Criterion 4k version, but I am a little impatient to get this title in 4k.
