Dreams getting a disc does not mean a Kurosawa set won't be released/announced, whatever. Virgin Spring was released on blu-ray a mere two days before the Bergman set was announced.

Now, I don't think they'll be an AK set this year, but I'm just saying that the announcement doesn't wash away hope for those that do.

This is a terrific set of announcements; that Widerberg set is dreamy and long overdue. It's serendipitous that it's coming not long after Radiance reintroduced his work to the market with their terrific release of The Man on the Roof. Hopefully even more is forthcoming.

I'm not sure where all the talk about a Kurosawa set originated. They obviously did an AK100 set back in the day but, as far as I can see, there's been no evidence that another is being worked on. You'd have to think that if there is a comprehensive director-focused Japanese set being worked on then a more likely candidate would be Ozu, considering (a) they've only released 5 on Blu-Ray (b) at least 2 of those, including Tokyo Story, have had even newer restrations (c) the licensor would clearly play along, seeing as Carlotta already did one in France and the BFI are working on a set for the UK and (d) Shochiku are doing a big push for Ozu's 120th anniversary, which will include " New York’s Film Forum hosting ‘OZU 120,’ a three-week Ozu retrospective, including all of the director’s extant titles, June 9-29 [...] supported by the Japan Foundation in partnership with Janus Films and the Criterion Collection"

I'm that weirdo whose favorite Kurosawa film is Dreams, and I never got around the buying the Blu-Ray version, so I'm actually pretty pleased with this announcement!

Nice going Criterion.
EM looked really good on their channel, to me anyway. (First time I'd seen it.)

Also Varda with One Sings!

The Imprint is from a master that's barely Blu-ray quality.

I agree Ozu makes sense for this year but just wanted to point out that Kurosawa also only has a limited amount of films in the Criterion collection upgraded to blu ray at the moment at best half, all of which other than Dreams have new scans.

I agree I don’t think it disqualifies the box set in any way. If anniversaries matter maybe we’ll get it for Kurosawa’s 115th anniversary in 2025.

Janus has acquired the rights to Black God, White Devil, which has been restored in 4K.

Can we please get a standalone release for this one instead of it being relegated to a WCP boxset? It's arguably the most well-known Brazilian classic among cinephiles.

About time I give this one a watch. I have a very ugly copy of this film, but it's been high on my priority. watchlist.

Janus also has the rights to Baldwin's ****** (1968).

I mean I've complained about Criterion before, but I really don't think they're sitting on a 16K of Red Beard just to epic troll us for reddit updoots.

I would love for them to release it, but if they haven't released a Kurosawa in almost 10 years, I think they're just not able to. I know this is an ironic post, as I specifically asked for Red Beard this century, but we have now all been privy to the depths of Toho's licensing.

Never thought I'd see the day.

Thought Kino was to release his Brazilian films though? Either way, stoked.

Well, I see a lot of people are quite pleased with these announcements, especially a Kurosawa release in 4K (despite it having a solid blu-ray already). But this is no time for criticism. A lighter month than the last, but still a decent month (especially with the New Swedish Cinema box set).

No, I’m not talking about Criterion upgrading existing films to 4K. I already said a few days back my biggest want is Barry Lyndon in 4K. I like the practice.

I’m referring to the above poster posting the exact same comment on two different places on the website, the announcement thread on the front page followed by copied and pasted and posted in this thread yet again. Completely unnecessary.

Ah, in that case I might somewhat agree, and I apologize for the snide.
