I assumed most silents were destroyed either for their value in recovered silver or simply because movies back then had no commercial viability after their theatrical run, so paying to preserve and store them could easily be seen as wasteful. Forward-looking studios could see the advent of television broadcasting in NYC in 1928 and imagine that could become national. Once television became widely available in the 1940s the storage calculation for everybody changed.

I recall reading about a print of Carl Dreyer's Passion of Joan of Arc being found in a mental institution (which was pretty ironic given the film's theme). I believe a many of Warner's film elements are stored in an underground salt mine (where it's cool and dry without the expense of active air conditioning).

Might be Criterion that will handle the Breillat set mentioned by Le Qui

Janus and Sideshow just picked up her latest film from Cannes

I bought Targets yesterday.

I drove into Atlanta early to attend the Silver Scream Spook Show matinee of Revenge of the Creature at Plaza Theatre, and decided to visit the iconic movie store, Videodrome, before the showing to buy one of their T-shirts. When I saw that they were selling Targets, I went ahead and pulled the trigger.

I could have waited another month and bought it for $10 cheaper during a sale, but I am glad that I supported the Videodrome store in person.

So I heard that WB might be fussy and could give trouble to Criterion in possibly releasing Mean Streets. I hope that's not the case. I really hope they do an "Early Years of Scorsese" set that includes Mean Streets, Who's That Knocking at My Door and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

An user says it's a licensing issue. That's something that I believe a Scorsese film wouldn't have since it's you know Scorsese.

Don’t forget about Boxcar Bertha. It’s with MGM and since Criterion did Raging Bull and The Last Waltz it’s possible they have it too.

I don't think they were saying there are licensing issues, just trying to explain to the OP that Criterion simply just can't release it, they need to license it (which OP knows already). Warner has been very open to licensing 4K to Criterion. I mean, they just licensed one of their biggest Scorsese titles, After Hours, to Criterion, so it wouldn't make sense for them to put on the breaks with Mean Streets, or other older titles.

Sandpiper released Boxcar Bertha using the same release as the Twilight Time one.

Okay, then I must have read that wrong. I hope that new print gets a Criterion release soon then. Maybe tease it around the release of Scorsese's new film.

Kino responded to someone asking for Paper Moon on Twitter, and said it's with another label. I have to imagine it's with Criterion, especially with them also getting Bogdanovich's Targets from Paramount too. The only other feasible possibility would be Arrow.

With this being the 50th anniversary of the film, I also have to think it'll come out this year too.

The Film Forum's full Ozu 120 schedule is now up: https://filmforum.org/series/ozu-120

The Harvard Film Archive will also be doing a retrospective at the same time:

Many from 35mm prints. A few screenings will use 4K DCP's.. The silent films will have live piano accompaniment. I wish I could go see them all, but I don't have the time, and tickets are $15 each. I hope to at least see my favorite film Floating Weeds though. It includes the 24 min short Kagamijishi (1936), which I've never seen. Like I did with their Mifune retrospective last year, I'll be complimenting it with a mini retrospective at home. Would be cool if others did the same too.

So is there a possibility of an Ozu set in the future?

I think it's possible, and probably more likely than a Kurosawa one. The films are licensed from Shochiku rather than Toho. I would just hope that if they did do such a set, it wouldn't stop them from doing solo BD (or 4K) releases of some titles like Floating Weeds.

The American Cinematheque in LA, and Lincoln Center in NYC will be doing a Béla Tarr retrospective (June 6-10 and June 12-13 respectively) with Tarr in person to do Q&A's or introductions for some films.

The good news is, in addition to Janus/Criterion having Werckmeister Harmonies (2000), they are also credited for Family Nest (1979), The Outsider (1981), and The Man from London (2007). I could definitely see a box set coming, rather than individual releases.

I was really hoping someone would make a set of Tarr’s early work. I really want his adaptation of Macbeth.
