Oh yeah, even when it came out, Yojimbo wasn't one of the best Criterion transfers. It'd be interesting to see if they or the BFI get the chance to do a UHD of this.

Lincoln Center will be showing two films from Kira Muratova, that Criterion has partnered with StudioCanal to release

Brief Encounters (1967)

Following two features made with then-husband Aleksandr Muratov, Kira Muratova announced her unmistakable aesthetic with this solo-directed debut concerning two women whose lives unexpectedly intertwine. In one beautifully realized scene after another, Muratova gently defines a love triangle concerning a city planner (Muratova), her geologist husband (legendary Soviet protest singer and satirist Vladimir Vysotsky), and the young woman from the countryside (Nina Ruslanova) hired as their housekeeper in Odessa.

Shirking dominant socialist realist conventions with a near-dreamlike structure of flashbacks and shifts in points of view, Brief Encounters is an unfolding meditation on longing that incurred the wrath of censors, who promptly suppressed the film for 20 years. It’s precisely through Muratova’s formal experiments that the director unearthed unsentimental emotional truths and a daring political consciousness. A Janus Films release.

The Long Farewell (1971)

Completed in 1971 but not released until perestroika in 1987, Kira Muratova’s fourth feature is a majestic psychodrama centering on the relationship between a mother and a son and rendered with a borderline avant-garde sense of aesthetic freedom and formal experimentation. Divorced Evgenia (Zinaida Sharko) has devoted her life to raising her son, Sasha (Oleg Vladimirsky), but their bond is tested when he becomes a teenager and visits his father in far-off Novosibirsk, planting seeds for the young man’s desire to move out from beneath his overbearing mother’s thumb. Muratova transfigures the resulting blow-ups and reconciliations as a kinetic and atmospheric symphony suffused with resentment and love, sensitivity and obliviousness, freedom and duty. I'd be so glad if they included it in their October lineup for Halloween because it would be very fitting for it. Especially with Walter Huston as Mr. Scratch.

It was also a bit spooky and funny but I watched it for the first time on April 7th and I had no idea that the

date of the film was April 7th. I had to do a double-take when the date was mentioned. I don't think I've ever had a coincidence like that with a film till this one.

I’m tired of the “equity” releases. Here’s a terrible film nobody’s ever heard of directed by someone nobody knows. Released in Ethiopia in the 90’s and well received by the 5 people who saw it there, the most interesting thing about it is the bougie paragraph some person at Criterion wrote to try to justify why it’s joining the collection.

I know what you mean. Been a problem for a while but things are getting better I think.
