How this any different from VS putting really bad regional shot on video movies to Blu? Art is subjective and these are products you can choose to not purchase.

I have no interest in a majority of titles most botique labels put out, but I'm glad there is an audience to keep independent movies and physical media alive.

I had a similar coincidence when watching The Song Of Bernadette starring Jennifer Jones. Years ago, upon my first viewing I began watching and within the first minute it gives a synopsis of things to come and says "On February 11, 1858..." and of course it was February 11th. Never happened since.

I love that film. I wasn't expecting to get so invested to where I was practically sobbing at the end. Vincent Price deserved a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in it. And Jennifer Jones deserved her Oscar for it.

Its nice to know that a coincidence like that happened to someone else because it seems like something that wouldn't happen often (unless you watch something like Mean Girls on October 5th for its October 5th line on purpose or something obvious like one of the Halloween films on Halloween.)

It's a problem because it's a smaller film, or you haven't heard of it?

Seems typical of the modern aesthetic to clamor for "original films" and. "no reboots"... but original films are met with crickets.

I'm tired of people who say they love cinema but write off things simply because it's from Ethiopia.

Plenty of my favorites are obscure films from places that aren't known for creating "cinema"

Like, Florida. *puts on Tim Ritter film

The absolute audacity of anyone thinking an Ethiopian movie might be of cultural interest.

Do you have any specific critiques of any specific releases? Surely you must have watched quite a few that fall into the category you're describing in order to be "tired" of them.

I have no idea what to predict for September. Are Janus Contemporaries going to be part of their announcement, or will that starting in October? They said starting this Fall, which begins September 23rd, so it's possible it could be for September. Also, I wonder if they'll take up any of the standard Criterion slots, or simply be additional releases.

My guesses:

World Cinema Project Volume 5
Spelbound
CODA 4K
Chocolat (1988)
Coffy

And if they're starting Janus Contemporaries, then:

EO

Why CODA? Did I miss something about a criterion/Apple deal?

No, just wishful thinking, and its lack of a physical release in the US. It was my favorite film of 2021. Criterion has licensed Velvet Underground (2021), which was an Apple TV+ original film. It states it was licensed from Polygram Films on the back, though it does have an Apple Films logo on the cover as well. I'm hoping Apple is open to licensing some of their original films, including Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Ah gotcha. Sian is also pretty mad about CODA not having a release, she was super vocal about the Disney+ titles being removed. Maybe that pushed her to explore a deal with Apple.

Although A24 haven’t yet been able to pull Macbeth from the Apple void.
