Just watched Onibaba. Gotta say I was underwhelmed; was hoping for more demon spirit stuff. It’s an ok film, but as far as horror it’s weak. (No, I don’t go into a film expecting to be scared. I just want a decent horror film.)

It's not a traditional horror film. It's really an allegory on what war can do to people. I'm not a horror/supernatural film lover so a film like this works better for those like me. Those looking for more supernatural qualities like his Kuroneko film better. I like it a little less than Onibaba.Onibaba is a grower though. The more you watch it the more interesting it gets and the creepier the step-daughter and mother-in-law's behavior becomes.

I think you and ravenus suggested this film to me after I had watched Devi and had just purchased Charulata. So thanks to you too! I have six of his films now and I believe there's four more in the collection.

I picked up Kuroneko too. Right off the bat you can tell the two women are creeps; the old one has that look of a woman you don't wanna piss off. lol

If you're forwarding, you're probably better off waiting for the Criterion flash sale instead and getting the loyalty points.

Just an FYI, there’s a new 4K restoration of Tokyo Story making the rounds, and my spidey senses tell me that someone - could be Criterion - is doing a UHD soon. At the very least we’re getting a UHD with the new restoration, at the most it’s coming out on both standard Blu and UHD. I strongly recommend booting Tokyo Story off your lists for July like I did, unless you have no plans whatsoever to make the jump to 4K.

Given that the best surviving element of Tokyo Story is a 16mm positive that was blown up to 35mm, UHD doesn't seem likely. A big box would be amazing, though.

Update: looks to be sold out now

Price mistake, Amazon just dropped Fantastic Mr Fox Blu-ray to $14.99. They are matching B&N's DVD price, not the Blu-ray

Just missed that price. They did the same thing with Bottle Rocket back in 2020-2021 for $12

Yeah, the 2020 BFI blu-ray is based on the 4k resto and smashes the 2016 Criterion blu to pieces.

just got the Pasolini set from Barnes and Noble.
The only good thing about the packaging is that won't take up a lot of space. Otherwise, the discs are very tightly packed in the case.
I actually would have preferred it to be like the Varga set even it would have taken up more space on a shelf.

it’s probably one of or not the tightest box set for discs i have. Reminded me of how difficult it was trying to get discs out of the Hitchcock 4k sets.

Thumbs up

So I guess Criterion lost its license with IFC?

OCN just announced they picked it up. Just as well I think, IFC was pretty neglected by Criterion.

Criterion never had an exclusive license, and many other partner labels have continued to do wider releases via their normal manufacturors after joining OCN (Music Box and Utopia). IFC has been putting out the vast majority of their titles themselves. When the right title comes along Criterion will do it, but it’s like one a year.

curious about the After Hours packaging. Anybody seen it yet? Standard case? Digipack? Initially when I saw the announcement I thought maybe it would be a clear slipcover like The Celebration

I haven't seen any real life photos of it, just this one posted by Criterion:

[Show spoiler]

I can't really tell how the discs are packaged based on that. The top looks like a Digipak folded out, so perhaps hubs on the other side. Either that, or disc slots.

Yet they also show individual cover graphics for each movie -- so I'm hoping there are 5 individual digipaks in a slipbox like the Jacques Tati set. But it's hard to correlate those individual images with the overview image and its odd dimensions.

That might just be online only, since each film doesn’t have its own disc.
