Agreed, it is easlly the best American film about "politics" (All The President's Men was about journalism).

I'm not sure how relevant it is today TBH. It describes a time when politicians were sold like breakfast cereal, today it's all about hate spewed on social media. If anything it's describing a time of relative innocence that probably ended in the 1990s (though even when the film was made, people knew about practicies like rat-f*cking, which we now make comedy shows about).

The cinema verite scenes, shot at real gatherings, are also interesting for what they tell us about how people comported themselves 50 years ago. There was something about the scenes at political banquets, people seemed more formal and posturing than I would expect today.

I hear that Toho is working on a new Godzilla film. With that in mind, I'm still hoping for an Ishiro Honda box from Criterion sometime soon.

I see what you're saying here and would agree with spewing hate on social media as being a campaign method today, and people being more formal in 1972. I did find much of "The Candidate" to be relevant today. Such as the candidates going on TV (or social media, or whatever) and using a bunch of buzz words, jargon, and carefully curated phrasing to come up with a campaign spiel that is vacuous and devoid of any actual meaning. They use a lot of words that ultimately don't mean anything. There's a lot of this today both inside and outside politics. I do avoid politics like the plague though, because I cannot stand listening to people say "the left is doing this blah blah blah," "the right wants this blah blah blah," it's so tiring.

Spot on analysis. I love it. I also find both films to be incredibly sexy.

Occasionally my wife drinks the Kool Aid and I love it. Recently I saw LOGAN on 4K while on a trip visiting my family. I highly recommended it to her the next day and told her it was streaming on Disney+ if she wanted to watch it. She said: "Oh forget that sh-t, can't we just pick up the 4K?"

Somehow I always though Notorious was PD. And I knew Fox had rights to Straw Dogs way back in the day (Magnetic, which was owned by Fox since 1978, dropped the first releases, and then Magnetic changed its name to Fox in 1982), but I had no clue that Fox/MGM dropped Straw Dogs in 2011, years after Disney bought ABC.

I also never knew until I just looked that MGM/Fox released Notorious in 2012. How did that deal even work? I’m surprised one of WDHV’s “adult labels” (Touchstone, Hollywood, etc) didn’t release them instead, but I’m sure there were some deals I don’t know about (or I’m forgetting the deals I do know).

Bought the Zatochi box set from my local Barnes and Noble today. Excited to watch it.

Tempted on buying the Fellini or Olympic films box sets next.

Criterion sells a 5-pack:

https://www.criterion.com/shop/produ...ay-case-5-pack

There are sellers on ebay that sell them too. I don't know if they're legit Scanavo branded cases like the official ones though. They sell both single and double.

Magnetic Video was distributor for ABC before MGM-CBS Home Video was formed. Of course, when MGM and CBS split, that resulted in MGM/UA Home Video and CBS-FOX Home Video. ABC apparently decided to stick with CBS-FOX.

ABC initially licensed the film library to Anchor Bay in the early days of DVD before the deal was ended due to Disney's purchase of the company. A few years later, I think around 2003-2004, Disney licensed the ABC library to MGM (which is why Criterion's Hitchcock titles and Straw Dogs went OOP).

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment was MGM's distributor from 2006 to 2020. That's why most MGM licenses to Criterion and other labels released during that time have Fox and MGM logos.

Of course, Kino Lorber managed to license practically the entire ABC Films library from Disney in the early Studio Classics days, except for the titles Criterion got. These are all either OOP or going to be OOP before long due to Disney not allowing a re-licensing of any titles (which is a shame - Kino Lorber's insider mentioned some of the films were UHD-worthy).

I bought this in 2014 as a blind buy based upon a recommendation of a friend. The best movie investment I ever made.

My Review.

Oh, and check out my license plate.

Yeah I myself believed that these ABC/Selznick titles should’ve been incorporated into Touchstone’s fold, under their name. These films aren’t even streaming on Star/Disney+, which is a bit of a bummer.

Is Mulholland Dr. too extreme to watch with my mom? I'm trying to put her on to gems. I've never seen the film.

There's a lesbian sex scene and a couple of grisly images, but that's it.

Yeah, that would be my main caution with this. Outside of anything graphic, Lynch's narratives are far from the norm, and may turn people off.

If I wanted to get someone onto gems, I'd pick movies I have watched and know are good.

According to the CHFB, film historian David J. Skal has teased that a "major" Tod Browning related announcement is coming tomorrow (apparently Mr. Skal initially said the announcement was coming Saturday the 15th, then corrected it to this upcoming Monday. Given the rumors that Criterion has Freaks, this may or may be what is being referred to there by Mr. Skal.

Original post quoted below:
Quote:
The Tod Browning project I’ve been hinting at (and working on) since the spring will be officially announced tomorrow. All I can say is that whatever you thought it was, it’s MUCH more. Like three times more. A grand slam trifecta, in fact!
