It's streaming on Tubi if you want to watch it before committing to a purchase.

I haven't seen it, but my general rule of thumb for purchasing music docs is how much I like a particular artist.

I think The Last Waltz is one of Scorsese's best films. It's a document on a historic concert, filled with great music, not just from The Band, but from their guests, such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Dr. John, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Ronnie Hawkins, Paul Butterfield and Neil Diamond. In between the concert segments, there are interviews with The Band, who talk about their career from the 1950s to the present. I think the film is highly rewatchable. The music is great!

Don't know if Mulholland Drive is the kind of movie for someone and you've never seen it? Well, you know this someone better than some strangers on the internet.

Watch Mulholland Drive and make a decision yourself.
Um, NO

You don't watch sex scenes with your parents. Or your kids.

Big NO.

Yes, thanks. Watching movies neither of you have watched can be fun, but I wouldn't pick one that I have never watched from a director like Lynch to get a casual watcher more into movies. To show them what I think a gem is.

I like Mulholland Drive.

Once. Then get angry that STOP MAKING SENSE, the greatest concert film ever, has yet to be released

Because it would be nice to watch a movie the two of us haven’t seen.

If Criterion has a Browning set coming and it includes THE UNHOLY THREE, I hope that the 1930 talkie remake directed by Jack Conway will be included as an extra.

The world needs as much Professor Echo as it can get.

Seconded, watched The Bank Job with my mom, it got REALLY awkward with the topless nudity in that film.

Well, I don’t know you and I don’t know your Mom, but if the two of you enjoy discussing the films after watching and are not afraid of digging deep with analyses, MULHOLLAND is a perfect choice. It is a movie just begging to be talked about so as long as you both know it deals with provocative situations and questions of what’s real and what’s surreal and vice versa, you could each have a great time. Sometimes the best films are what they inspire AFTER they fade out at the end and without question Lynch is a master craftsman of those.

If you decide to spin the disc, have a great time and report back if you like. More power to you and your Mom for taking a chance on more challenging fare than live action Disney remakes.

Allegedly, the Lionsgate UHD release of Contempt has been canceled, and so some people now think it may be coming from Criterion. Thoughts?

The film is a joy to watch if you appreciate vintage documentaries and legendary musicians.

From a technical standpoint (I won't go into depth regarding the substance of music here, as Winslow Leach already mentioned all of that), the editing is wondrous. Unlike today's music docs, Scorsese never uses flash editing or quick cuts. The camera lingers on every single musician in the spotlight and the film becomes a meditation of sorts. You are fully immersed in the concert, and what a concert it is (the last one by The Band with Robbie Robertson and its classic lineup!).

I wish more music docs were shot like this today, but the truth is, the quality of musicianship and songwriting today is more focused on technology and distraction and less on purism. It's purism in a sense where legends are assembled onstage and perform with one another with no strings attached. In my humble opinion, you will never see people with this level of quality again in our lifetime no matter what generation you're from.

It has great music and renowned for Scorsese's editing.

However the film is not without controversy. It was produced by Robbie Robertson, who worked closely with Scorsese, and the other band members felt it gave him too much prominence. In scenes where he is "singing" in the concert, he actually wasn't, his microphone wasn't turned on.

It reminds me of the Billy Crudup character in Almost Famous. TBH if you're looking for a great film about rock music, this (and of course Spinal Tap) should be your first choices.

That would be awesome. While Waters has yet to listen to a voice of reason regarding PFTW, maybe Criterion would be different. Considering his position is “either an edited movie and just an edited movie, or no movie at all”, if they get him to budge that really opens the door for a lot of other movies where the directors have taken the opportunity to restore their movies as a chance to play in their sandbox. (George Lucas, James Cameron, Michael Mann, etc.)

Yeah, The Last Waltz is really worth watching every Thanksgiving. I'm one in the minority, but I do think Robbie Robertson is as great as he thinks he is. It worth it alone for Muddy Waters and Ronnie Hawkins. Let's not forget Dr. John.

West of Zanzibar really needs to be in that mystery Browning set....

Dr. John was great. I didn't much care for the music video performances that were shoe-horned in. Especially when some of those songs were apparently performed live.
