DVD unfortunately, but I’m happy to own it nonetheless, as it’s pretty rare to come across.

Will hold out into 2024 a bit to see if Criterion restocks, otherwise I'll just pick up the Indicator titles.

Thanks for the input.
It's restocked for the Marlene Dietrich Criterion collection and currently at 50% off around 62$ on Amazon.com if you waited for it:https://www.amazon.com/Sternberg-Hol...s%2C112&sr=8-7

I have The Third Man Criterion DVD too. Mine though is the other cover with Orson Welles in the foreground and the larger title. I've never seen another copy of The Third Man Criterion DVD or Blu Ray in "the wild" so I'm glad to have my copy as well.

Does Criterion still have the rights to Red Beard?

Why haven’t they released it on Blu-ray?

…seems like a no brainer.

They're probably waiting on a 4K restoration or they just don't have interest in doing one at the moment. There could be a hundred different reasons but we won't ever know the answer since Criterion doesn't really speak out about these kinds of questions

I just made my annual Barnes & Noble desperation blind buy and today it was Tampopo.

Anyone care to offer their thoughts on this picture, positive or negative?

Does it have replay value for you?

The answer is Toho.

Toho is notoriously difficult to deal with, and either offer DVD-era masters or best case scenario 2K masters that are best described as "warts and all". I got Godzilla during the July sale, and while the image leaves a lot to be desired, it's still the best copy of the film.

Allegedly, they have 4K masters of a lot of their films, many of which are from negatives. Some of those 4K masters are from negs are of films that are only available in the rest of the world as 2K masters from FGPs. (Some of these 2K masters even claim the negs are "lost", "missing", "destroyed", "no longer exists", etc.)

I love the film but be prepared because a turtle is
[Show spoiler]beheaded while alive in one scene for a soup.
It’s just that one scene that might be problematic.

Yeah, that's honestly a dealbreaker for me. Hurting/killing animals, even most of the faked ones, is just uncalled for. It's not art, it's not a statement, it's just plain wrong. Easiest way to make me hate a movie. Even as much as I hate stuff involving children being hurt/killed (Salo, for example), I hate stuff involving animals being hurt/killed even more.

But but but, you have King Kong and Jaws in which animals get brutally killed for no reason other than that they're big and they need to eat.
