Have any (post-Disney) Fox Searchlight movies gone CC?

Thinking of Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers as a good candidate, even in the next couple years, given their past releases plus the fact that it’s so beloved and critically appreciated despite Fox Searchlight pretty much botching its theatrical rollout.

Disney isn't licensing anything.

Except they did give Wall-E a pass, and with recent rumours are likely letting CC have The Straight Story as well. So I’d be more cautiously optimistic (Andrew Haigh clearly has a good relationship with CC, evidenced by his going full in on the 45 Years release even though the film already had existing releases).

Obviously Song of the South ain’t happening but if Criterion did get some Disney I’d love them to do either So Dear to My Heart or Treasure Island.

Zero Disney films from Criterion since Wall-E released in 2022 isn't the floodgates so many imagined in their dreams. Fair to say there could be another case by case released like Straight Story due to Lynch, but otherwise these Disney claims are just

Honestly I messaged them in Email as there’s a few films on my list that really need Blu Rays and are definitely films they would license. The films being Wag the Dog, Nightwatch, Dead Presidents surprised on this one as they released Menace II Society in 4K recently so why not Dead Presidents too. And Power from legendary director Sidney Lumet.

Yeah I definitely see it happening for straight story but for other titles nope as Disney has a firm grasp on many licenses they own which includes a film that I’ve wanted on Blu Ray for years starring Matt Dillon called Tex. It’s sad really as there’s some touchstone films they own that really deserve Blu Rays and don’t have one at all.

The thing is with Touchstone properties a lot of them have been released on Blu Ray mostly by Kino Lorber but there are some that haven’t gotten Blu Rays at all. Like 25th Hour, Turner and Hooch, Ruthless People, Tin Men, The Alamo, Mr. 3000 and a handful of others. So while Criterion cannot get a lot of the Disney licenses they should probably try some of the Touchstone licenses instead. As a number of these titles deserve Blu Rays so bad. If Kino Lorber can acquire and release a lot of these titles on Blu Ray for the first time ever maybe Criterion should try too.

I know Fox Searchlight movies are unlikely right now, but I would be absolutely over the moon about All of Us Strangers being in the collection!

If Next Goal Wins can get a release I don't see why that film couldn't get one either.

If there is a further deal with Disney to let some Fox titles get a Criterion makeover I could see Haigh's latest to get the treatment since he's got others on the label.

A nice 4K retouch of Turner and Hooch would be excellent. We don't even have that on Blu-ray in the US. At this point I wish Criterion would stay away from too many 4K upgrades and just go straight into films on 4K that don't even have Blu-rays and only had DVD's or not even that. Seems like Criterion is focusing way too much on those 4K upgrades of titles that had great Blu-rays. Still, money talks and I guess that's why they are doing that.

I'm not sure how many existing Criterion Blus I would still like to see upgraded to 4K. I guess I would throw money at them for AMBERSONS and BLACK STALLION on 4K, but probably not a lot more? Oh, I know, count me in for a 4K of THE THIN RED LINE! That would be a Day One, I think.

Agreed Turner and Hooch needs a Blu Ray and I definitely want to see Criterion start upgrading more films that were only previously on DVD onto Blu Ray and I have been seeing that. With Freaks, La Bamba, and After Hours all three of them I own myself so I want to see more of these.

Historically it has been a Tuesday in mid- to late-February, but the past two years it has happened in March (3/8/22 and 3/21/23). So should still be coming, but not for another month or so.

I like your list there. I'd personally throw YOUNG MR. LINCOLN and ALI: FEAR EATS THE SOUL onto that. The ALI BD was released in 2014.

EDIT: I guess the 50th anniversary of ALI is up this year, too.
