Nice month! In for Anatomy of a Fall and the Ozu.

With BFI and Criterion recent releasing Ozu on bluray, perhaps a big box set is not in the works?
I know nothing ever was confirmed about this, but it was on many wish lists.

You call yourself a collector of Japanese films and don’t own all the Ozu’s? For shame!

Haha. I know. I had a few on DVD, but never got around to upgrading them, but I feel with Floating Weeds finally coming out it should give me the incentive to buy them.

With films like Anatomy of a Fall, Saint Omer, and Drive My Car getting 2K releases, you have to wonder if some filmmakers just don't see the appeal of 4K HDR?

They did release The Virgin Spring on Blu-ray shortly before they did the big Bergman box, but they didn't do that with the Fellini or Pasolini boxes. So, as always, who knows.

Most likely a budget thing, as finishing things in 4K is a lot more expensive than finishing them in 2K.

i already have the Studio Canal PEEPING TOM, but it appears that it has some different supplements than the Criterion, so I will plan to get the Criterion as well.

I own Floating Weeds and Peeping Tom on DVD--don't know if I'll upgrade, although I likely will. Not really interested in the other titles.

I have to say, I'm suprised there has been no belly aching over the lack of a 4K for Floating Weeds.

I myself am very happy for the BD

I was so pleased today to learn about Floating Weeds! I was actually just thinking recently how it could benefit from a new release but it seemed so unlikely I dismissed the hope altogether.

If it’s just about the cover and the supplements on the Criterion you can always buy the SC 4K and just get the Criterion Blu-ray. Just saying…

And yes, the Criterion does have a cool cover.

In most cases, if you already have a European 4K of film but want Criterion supplements it makes sense to just get their Blu-ray, unless it’s a case where Criterion has a better transfer of the film itself, as well.

The Criterion extras can be found online.

The Servant was BD only while The Trial was SDR only, while I’ve seen claims that the UK BDs of Walkabout and The Rules of the Game look better than the UHDs.

I kept wondering if an Ozu set would happen. I guess it still can, though. But this is great cause I never got this on DVD.

Have the Studiocanal UK 2-disc Blu-ray release of Peeping Tom, but may get the Criterion US release for the exclusive extras (some of them appear to be exclusive).

Have heard very good things about Anatomy of a Fall. Girlfight I haven't seen either (I do remember it getting positive reviews at the time it was originally released in cinemas over here).

I have the Eureka release of Floating Weeds. The transfer is a little washed out. I hope the Criterion turns out to be a big upgrade. (4k would have been even better).

It's a big upgrade. You can see screencaps on the product page here, and a couple more here.

Here's some, though I've reduced the size. It's richer, and beter balanced now, not having the faded/washed-out look of the Eureka disc, nor the overly contrasty/saturated look of the Criterion DVD. Reds are still quite rich, and prominent as you can see. For me, every frame, and composition here is like a work of art.

What's with the aspect ratio of these screenshots? I've never heard of Ozu doing anything other than 1:33:1, and he was famous for shunning cinemascope.

I know I'm in the minority, but I like "A Story of Floating Weeds" better than "Floating Weeds."

I'm still waiting for Luis Buñuel's films. I want "Los Olvidados" and "Viridiana" the most. I want to see more visually beautiful films on 4K. "Kwaidan" would be stunning. Jean Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast" would be great as well. Will "Raise the Red Lantern" ever be released on Blu-ray/4K in the States?

Criterion removes the black bars from images for their site. The OAR is actually 1.37:1, which is true for most of his films. The BD will be in that AR.

So does the Floating Weeds announcement mean an Ozu set from Criterion is less likely to happen? Probably. I was wondering if Ozu would get a big box-set since there was that retrospective.

Anyway, I am in for every release that month except "Girlfight", which I already have a DVD of, and was never crazy about it. (Actually, it's techincally my wife's DVD, LOL).

I'll take one of EVERYTHING ELSE, though!!!
They should get KOTFM and CODA at the same time. Especially considering the KOTFM 4K is locked. Have we figured out whether there’s such a thing as a region-free 4K player, or do they only work on Blu-rays?
