I love When a Woman Ascends the Stairs, so that would be a great one to upgrade finally.

Yeah, I really hope they don't stop. There are still a ton of titles that need HD upgrades. I really want some Kobayashi and Kurosawa to get upgraded soon.

Of course. But I’ll also take more Ozu since I never picked up ANY of his films on Blu from anywhere.

I'm just glad that, after two years, I have a month where I have two movies (gasp!) I want instead of one or zero. And the Ozu keeps Floating Weeds as a double feature, like the DVD, which makes it three. Peeping Tom is my other want. We ended up with three months with DVD upgrades because I forgot about All That Money Can Buy in March. So three this year! That equals all I wanted from last year. Kino Lorber and especially Warner Archives still is top for me of recent.

Finally a new Ozu release from Criterion, even if it's an upgrade.

Think we'll ever see PEPE LE MOKO upgraded to Blu? I love that movie.

It seems like one of those pre-wacky C titles they’ve completely forgotten they even have in their catalog.

Pepe Le Moko would be such an amazing film to have as an upgrade. I think a lot of those French Poetic Realism films are a part of film history that should get more attention on home video.

One of my fond memories of film was watching this with my grandmother. We both found out that this was the first film she ever saw and she knew this by the fact her mother called their dog Pepe in reference to this film. So revisiting this film after all these years for my grandmother must've felt like they went a full circle. It's quite amazing that we found out that this film was available even after all these years.

There's been no new restoration of the film from what I could find.

Just watched Under The Blossoming Cherry Trees for the first time in almost 20 years, and man now I want a Criterion release of these even more. While not scary in the traditional sense, it is a very haunting film with a score that works out with the mood of the film. I watched it in a very sub par transfer that looked worse than a DVD and STILL thought the cinematography looked great. I can't imagine how it would look on a Blu-ray. I just sent a suggestion for this to Criterion, as it's honestly one of the best.

I said they SHOULD, not that they WILL. Criterion would do a great job with both. But good luck sign a deal with Apple. As far as I know, no boutique or Big Six studio has a home video deal with Apple.

I bought the Italian 4K Steelbook and it was already on its way here when I found out the disc was region locked. It would be an expensive upgrade, but at least I would know that the player can play anything I throw at it.
My Samsung is starting to show its age, and this will be the final push I needed to go region free.

If I spend big bucks on a foreign 4K (whether you import the legal way or go on Fleabay, you’re getting one disc for the cost of two or three), I’m not double dipping on a US copy. That’s their loss for not doing a normal release.

I can understand the frustration, but 4K UHD is a region free format. Thus far, only 25 region locked 4K releases have been reported worldwide, out of over 24,000 releases. And even amongst those 25, some distributors have stated it was an error that will be corrected. I don't know that it's worth spending hundreds of dollars more for a "region free" 4K player.

Better safe than sorry. And I want the 4Ks of KOTFM and Caligari. The next 4K player is region free.

Besides, I want some UK Blu-rays and DVDs too. Can’t figure out whether my first Blu-ray will be Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia or Shock Treatment. DVDs it’s between the BFI copy of The Devils and the legit copy of Song Of The South.

The math works out that the region free UB420 from 220 is nearly $200 more. And you have a 0.04% chance of ever receiving a region locked 4K UHD from outside the US.

With Criterion having 300(!!) or so Japanese titles not on Blu-ray, I was wondering what are the top ten I would like to see get a release. Floating Weeds has given me SOME hope that we might see more Japanese titles from them, but not holding my breath. The ones I would really like to see are

1. Hunter in the Dark
2. The Bad Sleep Well
3. Heat Wave
4. Fire on the Plains
5. Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees
6. Samurai Rebellion
7. Bandits Vs Samurai Squadron
8. Ronin Gai
9. Matango
10. Demon Pond

There are plenty of others, but off the top of my head I hope we get to see some of these. If we got Hunter in the Dark alone, I'd never say anything bad about Criterion again. Been bugging them about it since 2008 to no avail.

Am I crazy in thinking that a Criterion 4k release of Arrival (2016) is long overdue? Every month I check the releases, and every month I'm disappointed. I would have thought that it would be one of the first Criterion 4k releases. I would have thought it would be on a short list for a Criterion release of any kind. Any ideas here on this? Am I just crazy for thinking that Arrival is Criterion worthy?

I really wish we could get a Shinoda box set at some point. My most wanted would be The Scandalous Adventures of Buraikan, Silence, The Petrified Forest, Himiko, and Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees, but any would be welcome. Would also like to see releases for the Oshima films Night and Fog in Japan and The Ceremony.
