A respected member, hariseldon, confirmed it's region A locked, so I would trust that:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Godzi.../#RegionCoding

I'm not sure if/when it'll come back in stock, but it looks like you can place an order for the UK release at HMV

I can also confirm that my copy does not play in my region-free player when set to region B.

For the amount of effort Criterion puts into cover art and packaging, I think they would be disheartened to know their product is now showing up far from its best presentation. At least none of discs were loose.

Is all Criterion product coming from Mexico now?
Several of mine were misaligned also, resulting in some slight tears in the artwork where the case bends. Can't really tell once I set them all right, but I did find it odd that multiple movies had misaligned art

The new 4K restoration of Le Samourai will be showing at the Film Forum in NYC from March 29th to April 11th. I'm hoping Criterion will announce the 4K for July, to coincide with the B&N sale.

Comparison of getting an Oscar with getting a Criterion release does seem ridiculous. TCM has for the last month devoted their programming to movies that have been nominated for and/or won Oscars. It would surely raise eyebrows to do the same thing for films in the CC. One might wonder if WB has acquired Criterion.

The article instead reads much more like an insider article, where "insider" is someone in the business who might consider it a mark of prestige to have their film included in the Collection. And who even knows about the Criterion Closet? The contributions there seem to be as much about the "inside baseball" as informed judgement, the selections very personal.

Rather than clickbait, I read the article as basically marketing for Criterion. I don't think the NYT disreputable enough not to label an article by an advertiser as such, it was probably cooked up by people who know each other at NYT and Criterion. How would you feel if you work for another label, seeing this free advertising in a major national newspaper? Might make for an interesting discussion in an ethics class in journalism school.

But the next article over is free from all these concerns.

Happy to read that All That Money Can Buy gets a 5 out of 5 here for picture & sound, but 4 out of 5 for the film? It's a total classic

So I’m a little mad right now so there’s a 4K Blu Ray of Stray Dog in Japan that came out last year not to mention a re release of the Blu Ray and well it surprises me that Criterion hasn’t put this on Blu Ray yet. While Japan has already done just that along with putting a number of Akira Kurosawa titles in 4K too including Ikiru and Yojimbo. Screw it I’m buying the Japanese Blu Ray if Criterion doesn’t want to do it then I’ll just import the Japanese Blu Ray. Not only that but they’re coming out with the entire Internal Affairs trilogy in 4K this year. Criterion has no excuse

Heads up those Kurosawa 4K's from Japan don't feature English subtitles.

Toho is a notorious PITA for licensees in what elements they chose to deal out and when, if ever -- not really a choice for Criterion.

Yeah I know still buying the Stray Dog Japanese Blu Ray it's better than nothing and while it may not have English subtitles at least it has been released on Blu Ray. I hope Criterion eventually releases it at some point but for me it's a nice consolation prize.

Honestly I'm not bothered by it I've watched foreign films without subtitles before. I'm just happy it has a Blu Ray.

Anyways I'm planning on getting Brazil and The Elephant Man from Criterion on Blu Ray this month. One of these is a rewatch the other is a first time watch.

Thanks for the heads up though other titles I plan on buying on Blu Ray from Criterion in the future are these ones.

Kagemusha
Eyes Without a Face I don't have any Criterion horror flicks on Blu Ray yet so this will be the first one
Seven Samurai
Dead Man
The Sword of Doom
Floating Weeds
Buck and the Preacher

Sure, it’s The New York Times. But is it clickbait?

Thank you so much for this. What an amazing read.

While I can’t imagine not liking The Man Who Fell To Earth for it being too confusing, or having an incomplete Dr. Strangelove or no film at all because the print was lost, the fact that this could’ve easily happened is pretty scary. No film, no matter how popular or beloved or acclaimed it is, is immune from being lost. They’re all fragile, hanging by a thread, and one tiny decision can destroy a film forever.

Also, all the other boutiques popped up after Criterion did. It’s very likely that if Criterion hadn’t popped up and started giving a damn about cinema, the film and physical media communities would be a very different place.

Good thing the film's politics sailed right over Svet's head, otherwise no chance he'd have awarded it close to four stars.

If you check the full review, you'll see the reviewer gave it a 4 for Special Features and Extras. The average of the three scores comes to less than a 5 and apparently the best the site can do to show that graphically is what looks like a 4.5 score. The site doesn't do n.25 or n.75 graphic scores.

And you're right, it is a total classic!

Rick

If you rea the full page and look where all the numbers are listed there’s a star review which gives 4 stars for just the film. It’s the star rating under the IMDb score under the preorder link.
