Wow my last order about 80% of my 4K UHD discs came scratched (most pretty badly) and a couple even had mystery goo on them! Also while the Pinocchio case is cool, pain in the butt to get the thing in and out of the slipcase!

Not going to sit there and watch a 12 hour movie marathon with eyes glued to the set the whole time to ensure there are no artifacts from scratches. I'd rather pay $5 more a release and get no scratches then have to return stuff, but return stuff I will if it comes scratched.

Le Samouraï 4K restoration is playing the Atlanta Film Festival at the end of the month. Can't wait to see it.

Since it's a Janus release, could we expect a 4K Criterion in the future?

Wait for Criterion to sh*t or get off the potty, or get this?

It probably costs them more to process the endless returns - and set up their ridiculous “hoops and hurdles” return policy - than it would to switch to a competent manufacturer. The UK discs come from somewhere else, and I haven’t heard a peep about issues with UK discs.

Before we do anything, we need to see the actual restoration. If it’s solid, then we can debate what disc to buy, because Criterion will take forever plus a day to release it here in the US.

If the restoration is a L’Immagine Ritrovata joint, then screw any disc because they’ll all suck.

Forget waiting for Criterion, I went ahead and pre-ordered the French standard 4K. I got the Criterion Blu for the extras so I'm good.

As someone has already mentioned, the reviews are glowing. So fortunately, the 4K doesn't suck ass (Unlike the 2K Pathe restoration a decade back).

There was a French review posting on the Le Samourai 4K thread back in November and the screenshots have confirmed that Ritrovata most likely had no involvement in the color grading process and were mainly responsible for the scanning process.

This French 4K UHD, while the special features won't have English subtitles, is a really strong substitute for those who can't wait for the inevitable Criterion 4K as it comes with English subtitles and is the same restoration as the one in the US theaters right now.

You’re right - Ritrovata had no involvement in the grading. On the restored Pathé BD they included a (French only) bonus feature about the restoration. Sad that Criterion just carry over their old BD without including very interesting new bonus content like this. I’ll copy what I wrote about the video in November:

"the project took a total of ten months with three months for the restoration itself. Scanning alone by Ritrovata took over a week and the color grade two to three weeks. The negative had a number of shots replaced by an internegative, also lots of perforations and splices had to be repaired. They showed a bit of how the negative looks like today - I honestly don’t think it was that bad but that was just a section of the opening credits.

The grade was performed to achieve Melville’s preferred "black and white in color" look. I’m not sure how accurate the blue look of the 35mm print Preston saw actually is but the restoration seemed to take another path as the original Pathé BD infamously had that blue look. The colorist looked at original prints and different sources and came to the conclusion that the look we have now is the most accurate. Director and DoP Bruno Nuytten supervised the grade. Nuytten apparently had good memories of how the film looked when he saw it in theaters upon release and offered guidance accordingly. No info about the audio in the video."

@Shane: Ritrovata doesn’t mean anything bad if they just provide the raw negative scan. This happens more often than we think and they’re really not bad at this. If you want the best version of the restoration, take the French UHD and keep your old Criterion BD for the bonus.

I've always been hesitant to grab any of these, for fear that they'll be upgraded to Blu-ray or 4K later. Are there any must-have sets that probably won't be upgraded?

Agreed. Still remains one of my greatest blind-buys, and I probably revisit them more than most films in my collection.

Somehow L'Eclisse is not part of the 40% off sale.

Quote:
L'Eclisse (English: "The Eclipse") is a 1962 Italian romance film written and directed by Michelangelo Antonioni and starring Alain Delon and Monica Vitti. Filmed on location in Rome and Verona, the story follows a young woman (Vitti) who pursues an affair with a confident young stockbroker (Delon). Antonioni attributed some of his inspiration for L'Eclisse to when he filmed a solar eclipse in Florence.

Just letting everyone know that Demonlover is available on Max to stream! Hoping that Criterion will release it on Blu-ray or 4K soon. Didn’t Janus do a restoration of the movie a few years back now?

I’m watching The American Friend and, boy, would it make a nice 4k upgrade. I doubt it will get one, but we can all dream.
