![]() More seriously, TLE did feel like a welcome throwback to one of those Spiegel or Bronston epics from the early 60s, with an intelligent script, Bertolucci's use of the grand scale and John Lone quite good as Pu Yi. I'm assuming its relevance faded in the popular mind with globalization and China mainly thought of as the place that manufactures everything you buy in Home Depot. That period of Chinese history held the fascination of a lot of 30s films, using it as their backdrop, from Shanghai Express to Lost Horizon. |

I admit my initial reaction was underwhelmed, especially compared to last month. But that's partly because I've seen most of these before within the past few years and thus am not in a rush to pick them up (and in the case of The Last Emperor already own a more than satisfactory version). In the other cases I have no familiarity at all. I will have to do some research on Muratova and Coolidge, but I will eventually pick up the Brooks UHDs.

Have to admit that I have never heard of most of the films in Criterion's latest batch of US releases, with the exception of The Last Emperor and Mother (have vaguely heard of the latter). A very good lineup announced today. The two titles I'd be most interested in getting are Real Life and Not a Pretty Picture.

Releases are mediocre for August. Nothing to get right away. Hopefully saving their best stuff for the last quarter of the year.

Very good month. 2 great Albert Brooks films. I’ll be picking both of them up.
For those in the know. There was the Bergman set and the Fellini set. Is there any chance Criterion has the completed Kurosawa up their sleeves? Whether blu ray or 4K? Is it possible? Criterion has been very slow on the Kurosawa front over the last handful of years. One can dream. |

Theatrical screenings of Born in Flames and Regrouping from last year were credited to Janus and both films are on the Criterion Channel and open with both the Criterion and Janus logos. Maybe the disc rights haven't completely expired, which could explain the delay?

When I look at the Criterions in my collection, it is the classics that interest me the most, and, although when they now do a classic they typically do a great job, especially on 4k, I do wish we saw more from the Golden Age (and I don't just mean Hollywood Golden Age).

2. While a Kurosawa Blu-ray set would be amazing, and a 4K set would be even better, the buck stops at Toho, who have been proudly shitting all over American fans of Japanese cinema for years. I have no idea why they have to be the way they are with Criterion, but I'd love it if they'd just be normal. |
