lol the person never said those were the only 2 indie movies of the 90s, but they were obviously the ones that they saw first and made an impression just like I'm sure you have a first movie that made a deep impression on you

I simply replied to what they wrote and what the context implied.

It's interesting to see they replies to my comment and not the condescending one that I replied to.

I want ro finally get Diabolique (1955) during the 50% off sale. Caught some of it on Turner Classic Movies the other day and it looks real good. Even though I'll have to read subtitles, it looks worth it. Like with Dario Argento's "Dark Glasses" (2022), it looks good. It should be delivered tomorrow. But yea I want to see Diabolique (1955). Just that title alone sounds good.

Where’d you get your information about Peeping Tom being an inspiration for Psycho? They filmed at the same time and came out less than a year apart and Psycho is based on a book.

Glad that this and the Kino sale are a few weeks away (not forgetting the Severin sale that will end not long before these sales start). Haven't purchased any Criterion (US and UK titles) in a while.

What are the chances Criterion will release a 4K disc for The Thief Of Bagdad (1941)? That has to be one of the most astonishing movies I have ever seen.

Actually, these are both happening in about a week! Just want you to be sure you have the info correct in case you want to buy from either one. Severin will start a couple weeks after these two

Kino June 27th
Criterion June 28th
Severin July 12th

Got my list and checked it twice. My wallet is ready. Going for Bound 4K, Farewell My Concubine 4K, I Am Cuba 4K, Werckmeister Harmonies 4K and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid 4K.

I’m really glad Severin and Kino sales don’t really phase me at all otherwise I’d be in trouble. Especially the latter. Always a big struggle to make a $50 order because of lack of releases.

How many Criterion titles have you guys bought on 4K despite already owning the blu? So far I’ve resisted the urge, with two exceptions: Night of the Living Dead and Blue Velvet.

I think the only Criterion BD to Criterion 4K I’ve done are Days of Heaven, McCabe and Mrs Miller, Le Cercle Rouge, Wings of Desire and Branded to Kill. I’ve gone from Criterion BD to overseas or other label UHD a lot though. I like to think I’ve resisted the urge on a number of occasions. I’m a bit strict with expectations. I’ve pondered Blow Out, Blue Velvet and Blood Simple but I haven’t felt the necessity to prioritize them.

Only Branded to Kill, which is my favorite in-print Criterion title (2nd favorite of all time) at the moment. My favorite of all time is Last Year at Marienbad and a UHD is coming out from Kino soon. Best believe I'm getting it as well.

With that said, I haven't bought anything else YET. I'm still thinking about Le Cercle Rouge and Breathless

(Paul Schrader, of all people! - made this point on FB just yesterday - he said that the Andrew Sarris canon - which is mostly comprised of the films you discussed and parallel to what Criterion focused on for so many years - is woefully outdated and needs to be rethought in favor of something more relevant.)

Schrader is dead on in this, and it's not because of anything "woke." How much do we learn and much richer do we see the world when we see films that don't come from the "classic"/familiar?

I'm especially seeing this in the work of so many female directors now, loving what many women bring to the screen. I'll see a gesture, hear a comment, or notice an interaction and think that a woman would have seen or valued that more easily than a man.

Aftersun. I rest my case.

Beside pre-orders I think I have all of them so far except Breathless which I'll pick up next month. It's been worth it every time

None and don't plan too. Blu looks great. I have purchased some 4K discs and while they look great, I can't justify doing this again, especially when blu looks really good and the jump in quality just isn't the same as with from DVD to blu and from VHS to DVD.

Honestly, I haven’t upgraded any of the Criterion titles I own on Blu-Ray I do mean that. The ones I do own on 4K UHD are as follows Mean Streets, Breathless, After Hours, Princess Bride, and Blue velvet which gets delivered next week. Other than those titles I don’t really own any Criterion titles in 4K UHD.
